Detailed information

General overview of Cofagrigus

Cofagrigus is a Pokémon of the Ghost type introduced in the Unova region. It is known by its English name Cofagrigus and its Japanese name デスカーン. This Pokémon immediately impresses with its appearance as a large coffin adorned with ghostly arms, making it instantly recognizable in the Pokédex. Cofagrigus is the direct evolution of Yamask and represents a far more defensive and strategic form, designed above all for long, tactical battles.

In the main games, Cofagrigus stands out for its excellent Defense and its role as a wall against physical moves. Players use it primarily to soak up damage, inflict status conditions, and control the pace of battle. Its Ghost type makes it immune to Normal- and Fighting-type moves, reinforcing its value in many matchups.

Stats and battle profile

Base stats

Cofagrigus has stats oriented toward Defense. Its Defense stat is very high, making it an excellent choice for countering powerful physical Pokémon. Its HP is decent without being exceptional, while its Special Defense remains solid. Its Speed, however, is very low, which forces the player to anticipate opposing moves.

Its Special Attack is sufficient to fully exploit its Ghost-type moves such as Shadow Ball, Dark Pulse, and Curse. These moves allow it to deal consistent damage while wearing the opponent down over time.

Nature and optimization

The ideal nature for Cofagrigus depends on its role. A nature that boosts Defense or Special Defense is often preferred to maximize its defensive potential. EVs are generally invested in Defense, HP, and sometimes Special Defense. High IVs in Defense further reinforce its ability to withstand repeated attacks.

Moves and learnable abilities

Key Ghost-type moves

Cofagrigus naturally learns several highly effective Ghost-type moves. Shadow Ball is its primary offensive move, while Curse allows it to sacrifice HP to severely weaken the opponent. Dark Pulse provides a reliable option against Pokémon susceptible to special moves.

  • Shadow Ball for consistent damage

  • Curse for battle control

  • Dark Pulse for offensive coverage

  • Psychic to catch certain Poison- or Fighting-type opponents off guard

TMs and move tutor

Through TMs and move tutor options, Cofagrigus can learn support moves such as Protect, Reflect, and Will-O-Wisp. Will-O-Wisp is particularly devastating, as it lowers the opponent's physical Attack and further reinforces this Pokémon's defensive role. Some versions also allow access to Psychic- or Poison-type moves to broaden its coverage.

Capture and Pokédex information

Catch rate and encounters

Cofagrigus has a relatively low catch rate, reflecting its status as an evolved and imposing Pokémon. It is generally obtained by evolving Yamask at a certain level, rather than being caught directly in the wild. In some generations, it appears in areas linked to tombs, ruins, or shadow-filled locations.

Depending on the version, it may be available in dark environments or under specific conditions such as fog. Its encounter level is often high, making it a catch reserved for players who are already well-advanced in the story.

Value for players and collectible cards

Strategic role in battle

Cofagrigus is highly appreciated by players looking for a defensive Pokémon capable of slowing down the opponent. It excels in strategic battles, notably through its ability to block certain moves and wear the enemy down over time. Its Ghost type provides key resistances that make it difficult to eliminate quickly.

Cards and popularity

In the trading card game, Cofagrigus is often depicted as a robust Pokémon with effects related to defense or curses. Its appearance as a large coffin and its connection to shadow make it a card appreciated by collectors, both for its aesthetic and for its tactical effects in gameplay.
