Detailed information

Overview of Whiscash

Whiscash is a Water and Ground type Pokémon, known by its English name Whiscash and its Japanese name ナマズン. It belongs to the Hoenn region Pokédex and represents the direct evolution of Barboach. Whiscash is often appreciated by players for its battle versatility, its highly interesting dual typing, and its ability to absorb a great deal of damage thanks to solid HP and decent Defense.

Type, role, and utility in-game

Whiscash has the dual Water and Ground typing, which gives it a complete immunity to Electric type moves. This characteristic makes it an excellent defensive choice on certain routes and in strategic battles. In return, it remains very susceptible to the Grass type, which constitutes its main weakness and can quickly knock it out.

In the main game, Whiscash is often used as a support Pokémon or as a versatile attacker. Its access to powerful Ground moves such as Earthquake allows it to effectively handle Fire, Rock, and Steel types. Water moves such as Water Pulse or Water Gun add solid offensive coverage.

Base stats and HP

Whiscash's stats are well balanced for a mid-game Pokémon. Its HP are high, allowing it to stay in battle for a long time, particularly in Gyms or extended battles. Its Attack is decent, while its Speed remains average, making it more effective in a defensive or tactical role than as a fast sweeper.

  • High HP for good longevity

  • Decent Attack to exploit Earthquake

  • Stable Defense and Special Defense

  • Average Speed, poorly suited to fast battles

Moves, attacks, and TMs

Whiscash has a wide selection of useful moves available through level-up and TMs. It can learn Water, Ground, Ice, and even Fire type moves depending on the version. This diversity makes it adaptable to several battle styles.

Among its most commonly used moves, Earthquake, Water Pulse, Mud-Slap, and Ice Beam stand out. These moves allow it to effectively cover many opposing types and to optimize its IVs and EVs for strategic battle.

Level-up and progression

As it levels up, Whiscash progressively learns increasingly powerful moves, making it a reliable Pokémon from the start to the end of the adventure. The TMs available in Ruby, Sapphire, and Pearl further enhance its potential, particularly for battles against Gym Leaders or the League.

Location, capture, and evolution

Whiscash is primarily obtained through the evolution of Barboach at a certain level. Barboach is often found in specific aquatic areas such as marshes, certain routes, or through fishing with an appropriate rod. The catch rate remains reasonable, which makes it easy to integrate into a team.

In Hoenn, it is possible to encounter it on several aquatic routes and paths, often in muddy areas or near mountains. Its appearance sometimes depends on the weather or the type of fishing rod used.

Whiscash in the Pokémon card game

In the trading card game, Whiscash is regularly represented as a Water or hybrid card highlighting its resistance and area-effect moves. Its cards stand out for solid HP and mud- or Ground-based moves, ideal for endurance-focused decks.

Collectors appreciate Whiscash for its understated artwork and its direct link to Barboach, making it easy to complete a coherent evolution line in a binder or a themed deck.
