Detailed information

Overview of Volcanion

Volcanion is a unique Legendary Pokémon introduced in the sixth generation. Its English name is Volcanion and its Japanese name is ボルケニオン. It stands out for its dual Water and Fire type, an extremely rare combination in the Pokémon games. Volcanion is directly associated with steam, a central element of its identity and gameplay. No known evolution exists for Volcanion, which reinforces its status as a one-of-a-kind entry in the Pokédex.

In the games, Volcanion is generally available through special events, making it highly sought after by collectors and competitive players alike. Its design revolves around dorsal boilers that project pressurised steam, which is clearly reflected in its moves and stats.

Type and strategic role in battle

Volcanion's Water and Fire typing gives it very appealing offensive coverage. It can hit many types effectively while boasting notable resistances. This combination lets it catch opponents off guard and slot easily into teams built around strategic play.

Volcanion is most commonly used as a sturdy special attacker. Its excellent HP base and solid Special Defense allow it to absorb hits while maintaining strong offensive pressure. It is particularly effective against Steel-, Ice-, and Grass-type Pokémon.

Key weaknesses and resistances

Despite its bulk, Volcanion takes heavy damage from Ground-, Rock-, and Electric-type attacks. Players must therefore account for these threats when building a team. On the other hand, it resists Fire, Ice, Bug, and Steel attacks well, making it a useful defensive pivot in certain formats.

Signature moves and steam offense

Volcanion's signature move is Steam Eruption. This Water-type move deals heavy damage and has a chance to burn, perfectly matching its steam-based concept. In the games, this move is one of its primary offensive tools.

  • Steam Eruption for Water damage and status control

  • Flamethrower for a reliable Fire-type option

  • Ice Beam to broaden coverage against Dragon and Ground types

  • Earth Power to surprise Fire- and Electric-type Pokémon

With these options, Volcanion can adapt to several play styles, whether in single or double battles.

Base stats and EV optimisation

Volcanion's base stats are geared toward power and durability. It has high HP, a very solid Special Attack, and balanced defenses. Its Speed remains average, which often pushes players to invest EVs in HP and Special Attack to maximise its effectiveness.

In competitive play, Volcanion is often run with complementary defensive investment so it can absorb hits for longer while dealing consistent damage through its special moves.

Volcanion in the Pokémon Trading Card Game

Volcanion is also highly popular in the trading card game. Several Volcanion Pokémon cards have been printed, including Volcanion-EX and Volcanion V. These cards are known for their ability to accelerate Fire and Water energy, making them popular in certain competitive decks.

Volcanion cards are available in ultra rare, full-art, and holo variants, or from specific sets such as Steam Siege. Their price varies depending on condition, edition, and whether the card is a shiny variant. Collectors particularly seek out full-art versions and Volcanion-EX cards in excellent condition.

Availability and appeal for players

In the main games, Volcanion is rarely obtainable without an event, which increases its perceived value. For players, it represents an excellent strategic choice thanks to its unique typing and versatility. For collectors, Volcanion remains a prized piece, both in the Pokédex and in Pokémon card sets.
