Detailed information

General presentation of Venusaur

Venusaur, known by its French name Florizarre and its Japanese name フシギバナ (Fushigibana), is the final Pokémon in the Bulbasaur line, one of the three starters of the first generation. It is a Grass and Poison type Pokémon that bears a large flower on its back, capable of releasing a soothing scent and capturing the energy of the sun. This flower grows as the Pokémon absorbs sunlight, making it an iconic creature both in the video games and among the Venusaur cards sought after by collectors.

Evolution and appearances

Venusaur is the final stage of a three-step evolution: Bulbasaur evolves into Ivysaur at level 16, then into Venusaur at level 32. It exists in a male and a female form, the latter showing a visible seed in the center of its flower. Venusaur appears regularly throughout the generations, in the main games as well as in the Pokédex. Its Mega Evolution, called Mega Venusaur, adds a second, more imposing flower and dense foliage, strongly altering its defensive stats.

Type, abilities and strategy

Strategically, Venusaur is valued for its defensive versatility. Its Grass and Poison typing gives it several weaknesses: it fears Fire, Flying, Ice and Psychic, but resists Water, Grass, Fighting, Fairy and Electric. Its balanced Special Attack and Defense stats make it an excellent wall able to take hits over time.

Abilities and moveset

Its natural abilities are Overgrow and, as a hidden ability, Chlorophyll, very useful under the sun to double its speed. Mega Venusaur, meanwhile, has Thick Fat, which reduces Fire and Ice damage. A common strategic moveset includes:

  • Solar Beam or Energy Ball for special damage

  • Leech Seed to chip away at the opponent's HP turn after turn

  • Sleep Powder to put a target to sleep and gain the advantage

  • Synthesis to heal and stay in battle for a long time

For optimization, a Calm or Careful nature combined with EVs split between HP and Special Defense reinforces its role as a wall. Maximized IVs in Defense remain advised for competitive use.

Venusaur in the trading card game

Venusaur holds an important place in the TCG. Many cards exist, from basic versions to high rarities such as Venusaur ex and Mega Venusaur ex. These cards appear in several sets and related products, making it a prized piece for collections.

Products and collection

Players and collectors can find Venusaur in various contents:

  • Premium boxes centered on the Grass starter

  • ex cards offering high HP and powerful attacks

  • French and English versions depending on the editions

  • Illustrated reprints across the generations

Its popularity, its early release date and its status as a historic starter maintain strong demand on the market. The recent Venusaur ex cards, with their attacks dealing heavy damage, appeal to competitors and lovers of rare artwork alike.
