Overview of Torterra

Torterra is an iconic Pokémon from the Sinnoh region. Its English name is Torterra and its Japanese name is ドダイトス. It represents the final evolution of Turtwig after Grotle, reached at a certain level. Torterra is a massive Pokémon that embodies nature, the earth, and stability, making it a creature highly appreciated by players who favor strategic combat and by card collectors.

In the Pokédex, Torterra is described as a living continent Pokémon. Trees grow directly on its back, and some small Pokémon live there in harmony. Its imposing size and high defensive base make it a solid choice for many battles in Pokémon Pearl and Pokémon Platinum.

Type and Base Characteristics

Torterra has a dual Grass and Ground typing. This combination gives it excellent offensive power but also significant weaknesses that need to be managed carefully. Its Grass type allows it to resist Water, while its Ground type grants immunity to Electric attacks.

  • Primary type: Grass

  • Secondary type: Ground

  • Category: Continent Pokémon

  • Size: very large compared to the average Pokémon

  • Region of origin: Sinnoh

In terms of base stats, Torterra stands out for its very high physical strength and solid Defense. Its high HP ensures excellent longevity in battle, especially during prolonged confrontations.

Stats and Battle Potential

Torterra is clearly oriented toward physical Attack. Its Attack and Defense are its main assets, while its Speed remains relatively low. This calls for a strategic approach based on anticipation and resilience rather than speed.

  • High HP to absorb damage

  • Very powerful physical Attack

  • Solid Defense suited to long battles

  • Low Speed requiring careful pace management

In battle, Torterra is often used as a defensive cornerstone or as an attacker capable of dealing heavy damage through Ground or Grass moves. Its raw power is particularly effective against Water, Rock, and Steel types.

Key Moves and Abilities

Torterra's movepool is very rich and allows for a wide variety of strategies. It naturally learns iconic moves such as Earthquake, Leaf Blade, and Leaf Storm, which make full use of its type and strength.

  • Earthquake to deal heavy Ground-type damage

  • Leaf Blade for a precise and powerful Grass attack

  • Razor Leaf useful in early and mid-game progression

  • Leaf Storm for strong special offensive pressure

Through TMs and HMs available in Pokémon Pearl and Platinum, Torterra can also learn Rock and support moves, further boosting its versatility in battle.

Evolution and Useful Information for Players

Torterra is the final evolution of Grotle, itself evolved from Turtwig. This evolution occurs through level-up without any special item, making Torterra accessible to all players who chose the Grass starter of Sinnoh.

For competitive players, Torterra is interesting in formats where its low Speed can be compensated by priority moves or support abilities. In raids or solo battles, it excels against Water and Ground Pokémon thanks to its natural resistances and raw strength.

Torterra in the Pokémon TCG

Pokémon Torterra cards are highly sought after by collectors, particularly rare versions from Sinnoh expansions. A Pokémon Torterra card often highlights its Ground and Grass attacks with high damage values and artwork showcasing its iconic forested back.

In decks, Torterra is generally used as a main card with high endurance, capable of lasting multiple turns and applying constant pressure on the opponent. The ultra and holo versions are particularly appreciated for their aesthetic value and gameplay potential.
