Detailed information

Overview of Grotle

Grotle is a Grass-type Pokémon belonging to the fourth generation. It is known by its English name Grotle and its Japanese name ハヤシガメ. This Pokémon is the direct evolution of Turtwig and precedes Torterra in the evolutionary line. Grotle is often appreciated by players for its balance between Defense and power, as well as for its strategic role in games such as Sun and Moon or more recent versions like Scarlet and Violet.

In the Pokédex, Grotle is described as a Pokémon that lives in harmony with the forest. Its shell resembles a dense grove where shrubs grow, reinforcing its identity as a Pokémon linked to nature and sunlight. This appearance also has a direct impact on certain collectible cards, where its plant-based design is prominently featured.

Type and Base Characteristics

Grotle is exclusively Grass type. This typing grants it useful strengths against Water, Ground, and Rock Pokémon, but also weaknesses against Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug. For players, knowing these strengths and weaknesses thoroughly is essential to optimize its use in battle.

Its base stats are oriented toward Defense and HP, making it a good choice for absorbing damage in the early and mid-game. Grotle is not the fastest, but it compensates with good endurance and a solid Attack, ideal for longer battles.

General Stats

  • Solid HP for a mid-stage Pokémon

  • Good physical Defense thanks to its shell

  • Stable Attack allowing effective use of Grass moves

  • Moderate Speed, to be accounted for in strategy

Evolution and How to Obtain in the Games

Grotle evolves from Turtwig and then evolves into Torterra at a higher level. This gradual evolution allows players to build a balanced team from the very start of the adventure. In several Pokémon games, Grotle can only be obtained through evolution, which reinforces its central role in the team if Turtwig is chosen as the starter.

In the Sun, Moon, and equivalent versions, Grotle is generally not available in the wild. Its evolution must therefore be planned and its level managed carefully to maximize its long-term potential.

Moves and Strategic Value

Grotle can learn many Grass-type moves such as Razor Leaf, Vine Whip, and Giga Drain. It also has access to support and defensive moves, making it useful across different playstyles. The use of HMs and utility moves can also ease progression through certain areas.

Thanks to its balanced stats, Grotle is often used as a defensive pivot in solo players' teams. It can hold out for multiple turns against frailer opponents and deal consistent damage. Players who optimize its EVs and IVs can make it a very reliable Pokémon right up to its final evolution.

Grotle in the Pokémon TCG

In the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Grotle appears in several series, notably in sets tied to temporal forces or expansions centered on the Sinnoh region. Grotle cards are generally evolution cards from Turtwig and serve as a bridge before the more powerful Torterra cards.

The price of Grotle cards remains accessible, making them a good option for completing Grass decks or collections focused on this line. Some illustrations highlight its forest setting and its vegetation-covered shell, a detail appreciated by collectors worldwide.

Deck Interest

  • Good intermediate card for accelerating the evolution line

  • Synergy with cards based on sunlight and the forest

  • Easy stock to find on the market

  • Design appreciated for thematic collections
