Swalot

N°0317 · Generation 3

Swalot

Swalot has no teeth, which forces it to swallow everything in one gulp. When it yawns, its mouth opens to an impressive size — a car tire could fit inside.

Detailed information

General overview of Swalot

Swalot is a Poison-type Pokémon introduced in the third generation. It is known in English as Swalot and in Japanese as マルノーム. It represents the direct evolution of Gulpin and retains a concept centered on the stomach, absorption, and digestion of toxic substances. Swalot stands out for its massive, flexible body capable of swallowing almost anything, which directly influences its stats and moves in battle.

In the Pokédex, Swalot is described as a Pokémon capable of swallowing objects much larger than itself. Its stomach produces extremely corrosive juices capable of dissolving solid materials. This information is important for understanding its defensive and strategic role on a Poison-oriented team.

Stats and combat foundation

Swalot's base stats clearly emphasize endurance. Its total HP is high, allowing it to absorb damage over time. Its Special Attack is decent, while its Defense and Special Defense give it good resilience against both direct and special attacks.

Its Speed remains low, which requires the player to anticipate turns and exploit status moves. At high levels, particularly around level 50, Swalot becomes a toxic wall capable of wearing down opponents progressively through status conditions.

Stat details

  • High HP for a Poison-type Pokémon

  • Good Special Defense

  • Decent Special Attack to deal consistent damage

  • Low Speed, requiring an adapted strategy

Available moves and abilities

Swalot has a wide selection of Poison moves and utility abilities. As it levels up, it learns moves focused on progressive damage and battle control. These moves are particularly effective in combination with its natural endurance.

Through TMs, it can learn abilities that increase its nuisance factor, such as moves that inflict poisoning or reduce opponents' stats. In Pokémon GO, its charged moves also exploit this logic of sustained pressure.

Notable moves

  • Sludge Bomb to deal heavy Poison damage

  • Acid to lower the opponent's Defense

  • Stockpile combined with Spit Up to maximize Defense

  • Dream Eater in certain specific configurations

Obtaining, evolution, and locations

Swalot is obtained by evolving Gulpin starting at level 26. In games set in Hoenn, Gulpin can be found in specific areas, making the evolution accessible fairly early in the adventure. There is no further evolution, making Swalot the final form.

Swalot's catch rate is relatively low, which can complicate obtaining it in the wild. Its significant weight and imposing size reflect its role as a Poison-type tank on the team.

Swalot in the TCG and mobile game

In the TCG, Swalot regularly appears as a Pokémon focused on defense and status effects. Certain EX or special cards highlight its ability to absorb attacks while progressively weakening the opponent.

In Pokémon GO, its max CP remains modest compared to other Pokémon, but it finds its place in certain prolonged battles and specific leagues. Its availability varies depending on events, raids, or Eggs, often at levels such as level 15, level 20, or level 25 depending on the conditions.
