General overview of Gulpin
Gulpin is a Poison-type Pokémon introduced in the third generation. Its English name is Gulpin and its Japanese name is ゴクリン. This Pokémon is primarily known for its extremely developed stomach, capable of absorbing almost any object or substance without discrimination. In the Pokédex, Gulpin is described as a Pokémon whose body functions like an immense digestive sac, which directly influences its combat style and defensive abilities.
Gulpin appears from the early levels in several games set in the Hoenn region, notably on certain routes and areas accessible fairly early on, making it a Pokémon often used at the start of the game. Its catch rate is reasonably decent, which makes it easy to quickly integrate into a Poison or status control-oriented team.
Type, generation, and Pokédex data
Gulpin belongs to the Hoenn generation and carries a clearly identified number in the regional Pokédex. Being Poison-type, it is vulnerable to Ground and Psychic moves, but resists Grass, Fighting, and Poison types effectively. Its gelatinous body and chemical stomach are at the heart of its official description, particularly in the Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Black, and White versions.
In more recent games such as Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum, Gulpin retains the same base stats, making it consistent across generations. Its modest size contrasts with its relatively high weight, a direct consequence of the substances stored in its stomach.
Base stats and role in battle
Gulpin's base stats are clearly oriented toward HP. Its Attack and Defense remain average, while its Speed is fairly low. This makes it a Pokémon better suited to long battles, where it can absorb damage and wear down opponents with status moves or toxic abilities.
In battle, Gulpin is often used as a support Pokémon. It can hold a defensive item to improve its survivability, such as a Berry or an item that boosts recovery. Its level of effectiveness increases greatly when played with a strategy based on poisoning and gradual attrition.
Moves, abilities, and TMs
Gulpin naturally learns several Poison-type moves, as well as abilities related to digestive fluids and status conditions. Among the moves learned through level-up, techniques aimed at dealing consistent damage or weakening opponents over time can be found.
Thanks to TMs and HMs, Gulpin can access an interesting range of abilities, including Fire and Normal-type moves depending on the version. This allows it to slightly expand its offensive coverage despite a limited base Attack.
Evolution, breeding, and cards
Gulpin evolves into Swalot from a certain level, which considerably boosts its HP stats and its ability to hold its ground. This evolution is often sought by players wanting a sturdy Poison Pokémon for the mid or late game.
In breeding, Gulpin belongs to a group compatible with several Hoenn Pokémon, which allows for optimizing IVs and certain inherited moves. On the card side, Gulpin exists in several versions, notably as a common or reverse holo card, often appreciated for its simple and recognizable design in sets related to the Ruby and Sapphire generation.
