It does not care much about the fish Pokémon that come to nibble at it, because even if its body is shredded, it regenerates immediately.

General Overview of Staryu
Staryu is a Water-type Pokémon greatly appreciated by players, known in Japanese as ヒトデマン. This small sea star with its bright red core has appeared in many games since the first generation. Its symmetrical body and star shape make it an easily recognisable species, often encountered on beaches, at sea, or via a fishing rod. This Pokémon is genderless and its central colour sometimes changes depending on its Nature or certain evolutions in gameplay.
Description and Useful Information
In the Pokédex, Staryu has a different number depending on the region, but remains one of the simplest Water-type Pokémon to catch in Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, or on beaches such as Hano Beach in Sun and Moon. Its red core, called the nucleus, is essential in its description: it pulses when it is healthy, making it easy to identify at night. Staryu weighs approximately a few kg and its compact size allows it to spin quickly to flee or attack. The Pokémon can use the beam from its core to trigger spectacular attacks such as Psychic in certain versions.
Base Stats and Battle Utility
Staryu's stats are centred on Speed and Special Defence. On average, its HP is not very high, but it compensates with a decent maximum Speed and a good ability to surprise the opponent. Its Water type makes it valuable against Rock or Fire Pokémon, especially at low levels. In terms of EVs, Staryu generally yields Speed points, which is useful for Trainers looking to optimise their strategic teams.
Recommended Moves
Staryu learns many useful moves for levelling such as Water Gun, Bubble, or Surf. It also has access to Swift, a practical move for hitting certain resistant opponents. With TMs, it can learn Light Screen to support the team, as well as more powerful moves such as Psychic in certain generations. Its power increases significantly once it evolves into Starmie using a Water Stone, which completely changes its offensive set.
Evolution and Progression
Staryu's evolution is straightforward: simply use a Water Stone to make it become Starmie. This evolution changes its body, making it more elegant and far more dangerous in battle, with a new multicoloured core. Starmie gains a dual Water and Psychic type in several games, which improves its strategic potential.
Where to Find Staryu in the Games
Most of the time, Staryu can be caught using the Super Rod or by Surfing on maritime areas. In Diamond and Pearl, it appears mainly on the sea route or near certain islands. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, it is often found at night, which matches its characteristic glowing appearance. In Ruby, Sapphire, or Black and White, Staryu is also present in several coastal areas or in specialised locations.
Tips for Players and Card Collectors
In the Pokémon cards, Staryu often benefits from artwork highlighting its golden star and its red core. Basic cards are very accessible and ideal for beginners, while some older versions from the Blue or Kanto sets are sought after for their vintage style. If you want to play Staryu in a deck, favour versions with a low-PP Water attack that deals at least a minimum amount of damage to prepare for the arrival of Starmie.
