Detailed information

General overview of Starly

Starly is a Pokémon of the Normal and Flying type introduced in the Sinnoh region. It is known by its Japanese name ムックル. This small bird is one of the first Pokémon players encounter at the start of their adventure in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, making it a frequent choice for building a team from the very first levels.

Starly is a small Pokémon, measuring around 0.3 meters and weighing close to 2 kg. Despite its unassuming appearance, it has a lively and combative temperament. It often travels in flocks and can become very aggressive when threatened, a behavior that is well reflected in its fast attacks in battle.

Pokédex information

The Pokédex describes Starly as a Pokémon that lives mainly in grassy areas, near lakes and starting routes. It attacks its enemies in groups to compensate for its low individual defense. This characteristic explains its limited strategic role on its own, but an interesting one once it evolves.

In the main games, Starly appears very early and is easy to catch. Its high catch rate and frequent presence make it an accessible Pokémon, ideal for learning the basics of battle, moves, and type management.

Base stats and values

In terms of stats, Starly has modest HP and low Defense, making it vulnerable to powerful attacks. On the other hand, its Speed is decent for an early Pokémon, often allowing it to attack first at low levels.

Its base values lean toward speed rather than raw power. This limits its effectiveness at high levels but is sufficient to progress quickly in the early hours of the game. As the level increases, its potential is revealed mainly through its evolution.

Moves and available abilities

Starly's move list consists primarily of Normal and Flying type moves. It quickly learns moves such as Quick Attack, which takes advantage of its speed, and Peck, an effective Flying move against Grass and Fighting types.

With access to TMs, Starly can slightly expand its move set, although its options remain limited before evolution. These moves are mainly designed to prepare for its transformation and make battles against trainers and low-level wild Pokémon easier.

Evolution and progression

Starly evolves at level 14 into Staravia, then reaches its final form Staraptor at level 34. This evolution marks a major turning point, as its offensive stats and overall power increase significantly.

For players, evolving Starly quickly is often a priority. Staraptor becomes a highly appreciated Pokémon for its strength, speed, and access to devastating Flying and Normal moves. Starly therefore primarily serves as the base of an extremely popular evolutionary line.

Starly in the games and the card game

In Pokémon GO, Starly appears frequently in the wild and during certain events. Its max CP remains low, but it is mainly used to obtain Staraptor, which performs much better in raids and in battle.

In the trading card game, Starly cards are typically common. They are not very powerful on their own, but they are sought after by collectors completing Sinnoh sets or the full Staraptor evolutionary lines. Some alternate art cards highlight its lively appearance and its behavior in flocks.
