General overview of Staravia

Staravia is a Pokémon of the Normal and Flying type introduced in the fourth generation, which debuted with the Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl games. It is the direct evolution of Starly and the intermediate form before Staraptor. Its Japanese name is ムクバード, a name regularly found on cards and in international games.

In the Pokédex, Staravia is described as a territorial and aggressive Pokémon, very different from its timider pre-evolution. It often lives in groups around the lakes and grassy areas of Sinnoh. This evolution marks a real turning point in battle, with a clear increase in its offensive stats and speed, making it a relevant choice in the early and mid-game.

Type, weaknesses, and resistances

Staravia has a dual Normal and Flying type. This combination gives it good mobility in battle but also implies important weaknesses to keep in mind in the games and in strategic battles.

  • Weakness against Electric and Ice attacks

  • Full immunity to Ground type attacks

  • Partial resistance to Bug and Grass attacks

These characteristics strongly influence its use in battle. Staravia is effective against many early-game Pokémon, but should avoid confrontations against opponents specializing in special Electric attacks.

Base stats and progression

Staravia's base stats are balanced for an intermediate Pokémon. It has a decent Attack, good Speed, and enough HP to weather a few exchanges. Its Defense and Special Defense remain fairly limited, however, which calls for an offensive approach.

As it levels up, Staravia learns several Flying and Normal type moves that reinforce its role as a fast Pokémon. These moves allow it to cleanly win battles against trainers and help with progression in Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl.

Main moves and battle usage

Staravia naturally learns moves such as Quick Attack, Wing Attack, or Brave Bird via evolution or TM. These moves are widely used in battle thanks to their power and synergy with its type.

It is often played as a fast physical attacker. In a straightforward strategy, it is used to quickly weaken the opposing team before being swapped out. In the main games, it remains an excellent choice right up until its final evolution, Staraptor.

Evolutions and place in the games

Staravia evolves from Starly at level 14, and then itself evolves into Staraptor at level 34. This evolutionary chain is one of the most popular in the Sinnoh region due to its simplicity and effectiveness.

In Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon Pearl, and their remakes, Staravia is often available very early in the adventure. This makes it particularly appreciated by players looking for a reliable Pokémon without complex investment in items or EV training.

Staravia in the Pokémon cards

In the trading card game, Staravia appears in several versions, often classified as intermediate cards. Its price generally remains low, making it an accessible card for collectors and beginner players.

Pokémon Staravia cards highlight its Flying and Normal type moves, with moderate damage but good synergy in decks focused on fast evolution. It is rarely used in advanced competition but retains an aesthetic and nostalgic value for fans of the Sinnoh generation.
