Detailed information
Description of Squirtle
Squirtle, known as Carapuce in French and ゼニガメ (Zenigame) in Japanese, is a Water-type Pokémon belonging to the first generation, native to the Kanto region. It is one of the iconic starter Pokémon of Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow. With its appearance as a small blue turtle, its sturdy shell and its mischievous look, Squirtle has become an iconic creature of the Pokédex and a popular choice for many trainers.
Its spiral tail, its simple yet expressive design and its temperament that is both gentle and playful have all contributed to its immense popularity. Squirtle is also the ideal Water Pokémon for starting an adventure, with versatile moves and powerful evolutions like Wartortle and Blastoise.
Physical characteristics of Squirtle
Squirtle is a small creature strongly reminiscent of a turtle. Its main physical features include:
- Light blue skin
- An extremely tough brown and beige shell
- A spiral tail evoking a jet of water
- Large expressive eyes and a compact build
It stands about 0.5 m tall and weighs around 9 kg. Despite its small size, it has great agility, especially in water, where it can swim at high speed. Its shell lets it protect itself when attacked, but also improves its movement when it dives.
The French name "Carapuce" refers directly to its shell ("carapace") and its small size, while its English name "Squirtle" blends "squirt" and "turtle." Its identity is therefore intimately tied to its role as a small, defensive yet intelligent Water Pokémon.
Abilities and skills of Squirtle
Squirtle has two main abilities depending on the version:
- Torrent — When its HP is low, its Water moves gain power, a major asset in tight battles.
- Shell Armor (hidden ability) — Prevents critical hits. This ability is formidable in strategic matchups, especially in competitive play.
Squirtle also learns many moves from the earliest levels, such as:
- Water Gun — its iconic move
- Bubble — slows down the opponent
- Bite (depending on the generation)
- Hydro Pump (advanced level)
- Surf — an iconic HM from the early generations
- Mud-Slap or Water Pulse depending on the games
It can learn essential TMs such as Ice Beam, Reflect, Protect or Rain Dance, which makes it very versatile.
Evolution of Squirtle
Like the other Kanto starter Pokémon, Squirtle has an iconic evolutionary progression featured across every generation.
Becoming Wartortle: the first evolution
Squirtle evolves into Wartortle at level 16. This evolution marks an important visual and stat-based transformation:
- Wartortle becomes larger and heavier
- Its tail becomes bushy and even more decorative
- Its ears grow and give it a more mature look
- Its shell becomes thicker and more resistant
Wartortle also develops more powerful moves, such as:
- Water Pulse
- Bite
- Aqua Jet (depending on the versions)
- Reflect and Protect
This step represents Squirtle's transition from a simple beginner Pokémon to a solid defensive fighter.
Blastoise: Squirtle's ultimate evolution
At level 36, Wartortle evolves into Blastoise, one of the most impressive evolutions of the first generation. Blastoise has:
- A massive, imposing body
- A reinforced shell
- Two enormous water cannons mounted on its back
- Devastating water-jet power
Blastoise's cannons can fire high-pressure water jets capable of destroying metal or knocking over far heavier opponents.
It can learn moves such as:
- Hydro Pump — its signature power move
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Sludge Wave or Rock Slide depending on the generation
Blastoise can also Mega Evolve into Mega Blastoise, fitted with a massive central cannon and two secondary cannons, hugely boosting its base stats.
