Detailed information
General overview of Snorlax
Snorlax, known in English as Snorlax and in Japanese as カビゴン, is a Pokémon of the Normal type appreciated both in the main games and in arena battles. This massive Pokémon stands out for its enormous HP pool, its solid Defense and its ability to absorb damage without faltering. In the Pokédex, Snorlax appears as a peaceful Pokémon that sleeps almost all day, but becomes formidably effective once a battle begins. For players, it remains a reliable choice in any team, notably thanks to its Thick Fat ability which reduces damage from Fire- and Ice-type moves. It also has a pre-evolution, Munchlax, obtained through breeding.
Stats and useful information for players
In terms of stats, Snorlax has a very high HP base, ideal for prolonged battles. Its Defense and Special Defense values make it an excellent tank capable of absorbing powerful hits. Its Speed remains low, which affects turn order, but its damage potential stays solid thanks to its Normal-, Fighting- and Ground-type moves learned by leveling up or through TMs. Its weight far exceeds 400 kg, which enables certain in-game interactions, notably moves like Low Kick that are influenced by the opponent's weight.
In the main games, Snorlax often appears as an obstacle on a route, sleeping in the middle of the path. Once awakened, it can join the Trainer's team and provide essential support in the vast majority of battles. Its imposing size is also noticeable in certain cutscenes and during special events.
Type, moves and role in battle
Its Normal type gives it the advantage of having only a single Fighting weakness, making it easy to slot into any team. In exchange, it benefits from no particular resistances. Available moves include Body Slam, Headbutt and special moves like Rest, which allows Snorlax to recover all of its energy. In competitive play, it is often used with Curse to progressively raise its power and Defense. It can also learn Fire- or Ice-type moves through TMs, giving it greater offensive coverage.
Gigantamax Snorlax and special events
Gigantamax Snorlax is a uniquely imposing form. In this form, available during limited events, it benefits from specific moves that boost its power and modify the effects in Dynamax battles. Players could notably encounter Gigantamax Snorlax during the Max Raid Battle Day event held on a Sunday, December 14th, between 2 PM and 5 PM local time. During this event, raids offered a greater chance of encountering this special form, with increased reward XP and Max Particles. Official sources also indicated an appearance bonus for players participating in the Day Battle study.
This type of event, closely followed by the community, allowed players to catch Gigantamax Snorlax for the first time in certain versions of the game. It was a rare opportunity to complete one's collection, especially for those wishing to optimize their team or complete a collection article on their dedicated Pokémon site.
Appearances, game versions and team utility
Snorlax appears in many versions since the first generation. Its imposing nature and tanking abilities make it very useful even in recent versions. In a battle situation, it can absorb massive damage, helping to stall against fast or particularly offensive enemies. In certain films and spin-off content, Snorlax retains this restful yet powerful role, contributing to its popularity.
For Pokémon GO players, Snorlax remains a solid choice for defending a Gym, with level and CP strongly conditioning how long it holds out. Its great bulk and battle style make it an iconic figure, whether in a raid or a League battle.
