Detailed information

General overview of Smoochum

Smoochum is a Pokémon of the Ice and Psychic types known by its English name Smoochum and its Japanese name ムチュール. This small creature is the direct pre-evolution of Jynx and appears as early as the second generation in the Pokédex. Highly recognizable thanks to its wide lips and curious behavior, Smoochum is often encountered at a low level in certain games, particularly through breeding. Despite its cute appearance, it can learn several useful moves for players looking for a strategic partner specialized in Ice.

Characteristics and useful information

In the Pokédex, Smoochum has a varying number depending on the region but always holds a place in the list of iconic baby Pokémon. In terms of base stats, it stands out for its good special attack and decent speed for its very low size and weight. It remains fragile in defense and HP, which calls for a cautious playstyle. Its catch rate is high, making it easy to obtain early in the game or through trading.

Type and weaknesses

With its Ice-Psychic typing, Smoochum has good offensive coverage but suffers from common weaknesses, particularly against Fighting-, Dark- and Fire-type moves. On the other hand, it can deal significant damage to Dragon-, Grass-, Flying- and Ground-type Pokémon thanks to its Ice-type moves, making it a valuable asset in battle when well prepared.

Moves, capabilities and progression

As Smoochum levels up, it learns moves oriented toward the special side. Among its notable moves, one can find Powder Snow, Confusion, Attract, Ice Punch (via TM depending on the version) and Blizzard, a very powerful but inaccurate move. It can also benefit from utility moves such as Light Screen, particularly useful for compensating its low defense.

Evolution into Jynx

Smoochum evolves into Jynx when it reaches a given level while having high affection toward its trainer. The evolution brings significantly superior stats and a stronger presence in battle, which encourages raising it throughout the game. Many players prefer to train Smoochum from the start in order to obtain an optimized Jynx.

Abilities and effects

Depending on the generation, Smoochum can have abilities such as Oblivious or Forewarn, influencing how it handles certain opposing moves. These abilities offer interesting effects in prolonged battles, sometimes allowing it to counter predictable strategies.

Location, breeding and obtaining

In several games, Smoochum appears via Eggs obtained by breeding a Jynx or a compatible Pokémon. Its breeding involves the Human-Like egg group and sometimes requires specific held items to obtain particular moves. In certain titles such as Diamond, Pearl, Sun or Moon, it can also be caught in cold areas or during special events.

Smoochum in the Pokémon card game

Smoochum cards are often distinguished by low power but interesting effects, particularly related to Ice, sleep or the kiss mechanic. Certain editions, particularly in Ruby and Sapphire or Sun and Moon, highlight its role as a support Pokémon. Its price generally remains low on the market, making it easy to collect the different forms, including Shiny versions or products tied to Smoochum.
