General Overview of Seadra
Seadra is a Water-type Pokémon, known in Japanese as シードラ. It is the direct evolution of Horsea and a key stage if you want to progress to Kingdra, especially in recent games. Its slender body, with its dorsal spine that protects it, makes it a mobile opponent capable of striking fast thanks to its small pectoral fins. In the Pokédex, Seadra is described as a Pokémon that uses its tail to stabilise itself and launch precise attacks. Players appreciate it for its ability to deal consistent damage and disrupt opponents with Water moves or secondary abilities such as Bubble Beam or Signal Beam.
Evolution and Useful Information
In the main games, Seadra evolves from Horsea at level 32 and can evolve into Kingdra via trading while holding a Dragon Scale. This evolution to the Dragon/Water type makes it a major asset on a team. Seadra, as an intermediate Pokémon, already has very good Special Attack and Defence stats, making it a solid Pokémon capable of taking hits while striking back hard.
For Trainers who want to optimise their team, Seadra offers a good Defence EV yield, useful for building resistant sets. Its moves such as Hydro Pump, Blizzard, Sand Tomb, or Twister allow it to cover various types, including Dragon or Ice types, even though Seadra remains primarily specialised in Water attacks like Water Gun or Surf.
Seadra's Stats and Type
Seadra has a pure Water type, giving it limited weaknesses to Electric and Grass. Its base stats are built around a good total oriented towards Defence and Special Attack. Its HP is average, but its robust body and high Defence allow it to take several hits before going down. The PP values of its moves are standard for a Water Pokémon, with access to many TMs and HMs such as Surf or Dragon Dance in certain games.
Its small pectoral fins also give it good Speed compared to other Water Pokémon of the same generation, which can catch certain opponents off guard. Its tail serves as an anchor for launching powerful moves like Hydro Pump. Seadra can also learn Aurora Beam, Twister, or Blizzard, making it very flexible in battle.
Recommended Moves and Possible Sets
For a player who wants to get the most out of Seadra before it evolves, here are some essential moves:
Hydro Pump - maximum power and massive damage.
Surf - more reliable and consistent, excellent for strategy.
Blizzard - useful against Dragon or Grass Pokémon.
Bubble Beam - for strategies based on Speed reduction.
Twister or Whirlpool - to hinder the enemy and force switches.
Thanks to its solid Defence, Seadra can hold out for a long time on the field, but it shines most in a special offensive role. Many players prefer to evolve it quickly to take advantage of Kingdra, but Seadra remains a very good intermediate Pokémon, especially in FireRed, Platinum, Diamond, and Pearl versions where it is often available on routes near beaches or in marine areas.
Seadra and the Pokémon Trading Card Game
In the Pokémon TCG, Seadra appears in several editions, often focused on fast Water moves like Beam or Bubble. Some cards highlight its fins, which are highly prized in traditional medicine within the lore, while others emphasise its whirlpools and Twister attacks. Seadra's Water-type cards are generally oriented towards consistent damage and status effects, particularly poisoning or Speed reduction.
Where to Find Seadra in the Games
Depending on the generation, Seadra is found in marine areas, near islands and beaches, or on submerged routes. Catching it sometimes requires a somewhat low encounter rate, but it remains accessible via the Surf technique or fishing encounters. Trainers looking for a reliable and powerful Water Pokémon mid-adventure always appreciate its presence.
