General Overview of Horsea
Horsea is a Water-type Pokémon, known in Japanese as タッツー. In the Pokédex, it is classified as a small blue seahorse living near reefs, beaches, and islands. Its compact form and ability to move by shooting gentle jets of water make it a Pokémon appreciated by both beginner and experienced Trainers. Horsea is generally available at a low level in many games, making it easy to add early to a Water-type-focused team.
Like many aquatic Pokémon from Kanto, Horsea can learn moves based on Bubble, Bubble Beam, or Water Gun, giving it a useful role right from the start of an adventure. Its base stats are modest, but it has good Special Defence and decent Speed for a small Pokémon. Its true potential is revealed as it gains levels and progresses towards its evolution.
Evolution and Essential Information
Horsea evolves into Seadra when it reaches a certain level, which significantly improves its power, Defence, and role in battle. In some games, Seadra can then evolve into Kingdra when traded while holding a specific item, resulting in a powerful Pokémon of the Water and Dragon type. This final evolution grants it useful resistances and a highly sought-after offensive profile in strategic teams.
For Trainers wishing to optimise Horsea, it is advisable to prioritise Water moves such as Water Gun, Hydro Pump, or Surf, as well as certain moves to cover its weaknesses — for example, Ice-type moves to counter Dragon or Grass Pokémon. The effort values (EVs) to distribute depend on the role the Trainer gives it, but it is common to boost its Speed and Special Attack.
Base Stats and Battle Role
Horsea's base stats are centred on Special Defence and Special Attack. Even if its HP remains relatively low, its ability to dodge and absorb certain special attacks allows it to hold its own against more powerful opponents in the early stages of the game. For optimal use, it is often recommended to raise it to a sufficient level to unlock its best moves before evolving it.
In battle, Horsea uses its small size and mobility to take advantage of fast attacks. It can learn useful moves like Smokescreen or Agility, which improve its endurance in situations where it needs to stall or weaken an opponent. In more offensive battle sets, its access to Water and Ice moves allows it to hit a wide range of types.
Horsea in the Games and Cards
Horsea appears in many games and aquatic areas. It can be caught in regions near beaches, ports, or in flooded caves. Its encounter rate often depends on the version being played, but it generally remains easy to find, making it a good choice to complete a starting team focused on the Water type.
As for Pokémon cards, Horsea exists in several editions. It often appears as a Basic Pokémon with simple but effective moves, suited to beginner Water decks. Some special editions feature Horsea cards illustrated against underwater or reef backgrounds, highlighting its seahorse appearance.
Tips for Players and Breeding
For players looking to hatch a Horsea, breeding is possible with a compatible Pokémon from the Water group. Eggs generally yield a Horsea at the minimum level, ideal for training one with the desired moves and Nature. The classic weaknesses of the Water type apply: Horsea is weak to Grass and Electric moves, but resists Fire, Ice, and Steel well.
Thanks to its availability, powerful evolutions, and ease of use, Horsea remains a solid choice on a team, whether for the games or for building a Pokémon card collection centred on Water-type Pokémon.
