Detailed information

General overview of Rillaboom

Rillaboom is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in the Galar region. Its English name is Rillaboom and its Japanese name is ゴリランダー. It is the final form of the Grass starter's evolutionary line for this generation, following Grookey and Thwackey. Rillaboom is an imposing Pokémon, specializing in physical attacks and highly valued by players for its raw power and strategic impact in battles.

In the Pokédex, Rillaboom is described as a Pokémon that uses its drum to channel the energy of nature. Its large size and impressive appearance perfectly reflect its role as the primary attacker in a Grass-type-oriented team.

Evolution and how to obtain

Rillaboom is the final evolution of Grookey. Grookey evolves into Thwackey, and Thwackey then evolves into Rillaboom at level 35. This evolution marks a significant jump in stats, particularly in Attack and HP.

In the main games, Rillaboom can only be obtained through evolution — it does not exist in the wild. In certain modes or specific events, it may be available through raids or special distributions.

Type and base stats

Rillaboom is a pure Grass-type Pokémon. This type gives it strengths against Water, Ground, and Rock types, but also weaknesses against Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug types.

Its base stats are clearly oriented toward attack power and bulk:

  • high HP allowing solid staying power in battle

  • very high Attack, ideal for dealing heavy damage

  • decent Defense to absorb physical hits

  • low Special Attack, rarely exploited

  • average Speed

This profile makes Rillaboom an excellent offensive Pokémon, particularly effective on teams focused on terrain control.

Moves and abilities

Rillaboom has a wide selection of Grass and Fighting moves, reinforcing its role as a physical fighter. Its signature move is Drum Beating, a powerful Grass-type move that can also lower the opponent's Speed depending on the generation.

It can also learn moves such as:

  • Wood Hammer to deal enormous damage

  • Earthquake to cover the Ground type

  • Ice Punch or Fire Punch depending on available TMs

  • Superpower to break through opposing defenses

With TMs, Rillaboom can tailor its moveset to many different battle styles, whether in solo play or competitive strategy.

Ability and strategic potential

Rillaboom's most iconic ability is Grassy Surge. When it enters battle, the terrain becomes a Grassy Terrain, which boosts Grass-type moves and restores HP each turn for all grounded Pokémon. This ability completely changes the dynamics of a battle.

With this ability, Rillaboom becomes a strategic cornerstone capable of supporting its team while dealing heavy damage. It can also be used as a lead to set the terrain right from the start of battle.

Battle usage and cards

In battle, Rillaboom is often played as a primary attacker. Its full potential is reached at level 50, but it remains highly effective from level 35 onwards after evolution. Its catch rate is not relevant since it cannot be caught in the wild.

In the trading card game, Rillaboom has several noteworthy versions, including Rillaboom VMAX. These cards highlight its raw power, high-damage attacks, and synergy with Grass energies. They are sought after by players and collectors alike for their effectiveness and design.

Rillaboom remains a very popular Pokémon, both for competitive play and collecting, thanks to its unique style, solid stats, and central role in Grass-type teams.
