General Overview of Pansage
Pansage is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in the fifth generation. Its Japanese name is ヤナップ. It belongs to the family of elemental monkeys from the Unova region and stands out for its role as an offensive support Pokémon early in the adventure. Pansage is often offered to Trainers as a strategic choice against early Water- or Rock-type battles.
This Pokémon is easily recognizable by its tuft of green leaves on its head, which symbolizes its affinity with grass and nature. In the Pokédex, it is described as a Pokémon capable of growing plants in poor soil, which reinforces its image as a useful partner from the very first hours of the game.
Type and Base Stats
Pansage is a pure Grass-type Pokémon. This type offers it interesting resistances against Water, Ground, and Rock-type moves, but heavily exposes it to Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug types. These weaknesses must be taken into account when building a balanced team.
Its base stats are oriented toward Speed and Special Attack, making it a fast but fragile attacker. Its HP and Defense remain modest, which limits its ability to take sustained hits.
Decent HP for a starter Pokémon

Good Speed to surprise the opponent
Low defenses requiring good anticipation
Moves and Battle Potential
Pansage naturally learns several useful Grass-type moves from the early levels. Vine Whip and Seed Bomb form its offensive base, allowing it to effectively exploit the Grass type against Water or Rock Pokémon frequently encountered early in the game.
With access to TMs and HMs, it can broaden its move selection with support moves like Protect or Torment, or coverage moves to surprise certain opponents. Its Speed often allows it to strike first, which is crucial given its limited HP.
Strategic Use
In battle, Pansage is most effective in quick exchanges. It excels when it can deal damage without taking too much pressure. On the other hand, it becomes vulnerable against Pokémon capable of resisting the Grass type or that have Fire- or Flying-type moves.
Evolution, Capture, and Breeding
Pansage evolves into Simisage with a Leaf Stone. This evolution significantly improves its offensive power and allows it to remain viable for longer in the adventure. Pansage's catch rate is relatively standard, making it easy to obtain without requiring many Ultra Balls.
In breeding, Pansage belongs to the Field and Human-Like egg groups, which offers interesting options for passing on optimized IVs and certain moves through breeding. Strategy-focused Trainers can thus maximize its potential in competitive battles.
Pansage in the Pokémon Trading Card Game
In the trading card game, Pansage appears regularly as a basic Grass-type card. It is often used as a starter card to evolve into Simisage. Its cards feature simple but effective moves, ideal for fast Grass-oriented decks.
Collectors appreciate Pansage for its colorful artwork and its connection to Pansear and Panpour, forming a cohesive trio that is highly sought after in certain expansions centered on the Unova region.
