Detailed information

General overview of Noctowl

Noctowl is a Normal- and Flying-type Pokémon introduced in the second generation. It is known in Japanese as Yorunozuku. This owl Pokémon is the direct evolution of Hoothoot and represents a more powerful and more strategic form for players seeking a versatile support in battle.

In the Pokédex, Noctowl is often described as an owl with exceptional vision, capable of spotting opponents even in total darkness. This trait is felt in its gameplay, particularly through its access to several Psychic- and Flying-type attacks that exploit its accuracy and battlefield control.

Type and role in battle

Noctowl has the dual Normal and Flying typing. This combination grants it an immunity to Ground and an interesting resistance to Ghost attacks. However, it remains weak against Electric, Ice, and Rock types, which calls for a degree of caution during battles.

In battle, Noctowl is not designed as a pure attacker. It is better suited to a support or utility Pokémon role, capable of hindering the opponent with status moves while dealing decent damage over time.

Stats and strategic potential

Noctowl's stats highlight solid HP and a strong Special Defense. Its Special Attack is decent, allowing it to effectively exploit certain Psychic moves. Its Speed remains average, making it reliant on anticipation-based strategies rather than outright speed.

For in-game optimization, EVs are often invested in HP and Special Defense to maximize longevity. This spread allows Noctowl to stay on the field longer and wear down opponents.

Key moves and TMs

Noctowl has a varied move list. It can learn standard Flying moves such as Aerial Ace or Brave Bird, as well as Psychic moves that enhance its utility. It also has access to several useful TMs for adapting its set to the team's needs.

  • Psyshock to exploit its special power

  • Hurricane to deal heavy Flying-type damage

  • Hypnosis to put the opponent to sleep

  • Roost to recover HP

These moves make Noctowl an excellent choice for prolonged battles, especially in solo play or within a balanced team.

Evolution and obtaining

Noctowl is the evolution of Hoothoot. The evolution is triggered by leveling up, generally at level 20. Hoothoot is available fairly early in several games, often on nocturnal routes or in forested areas, making Noctowl accessible without major difficulty.

Once evolved, Noctowl gains in size and power, becoming a more imposing and reliable Pokémon for the rest of the adventure, particularly in the Johto region.

Noctowl in the Pokémon Trading Card Game

In the Trading Card Game, Noctowl regularly appears as a control- or support-oriented card. Its abilities often focus on disrupting the opponent's gameplay, manipulating damage, or managing the hand.

These cards are not always the most powerful in terms of raw attack, but they find their place in tactical decks where longevity and resource management are essential. For collectors, Noctowl remains popular thanks to its dark and nocturnal design, often showcased in the illustrations.
