Detailed information

General overview of Hoothoot

Hoothoot is a Normal- and Flying-type Pokémon introduced in the second generation. Its Japanese name is ホーホー. This owl Pokémon is easily recognizable thanks to its distinctive one-legged stance and its piercing gaze, very popular among players discovering the Johto region.

In the Pokédex, Hoothoot is known for its extremely precise sense of time. It switches feet at exactly the same hour each day, making it a natural landmark for the inhabitants of the Pokémon world. For players, it is a Pokémon often encountered early in the adventure, particularly on several night-time routes.

Type and role in battle

Hoothoot has a dual Normal and Flying typing. This combination allows it to avoid certain Ground-type attacks and grants it solid mobility in battle. However, it remains vulnerable to Electric, Ice, and Rock attacks, which sometimes limits its effectiveness in prolonged battles.

Strategically, Hoothoot is rarely used for its raw power. It is better appreciated for its support moves, its Ghost- or Psychic-type attacks, and its utility abilities, which can disrupt the opponent.

Available abilities

  • Insomnia, preventing sleep in battle

  • Tinted Lens, increasing the damage of moves that are not very effective

  • Keen Eye as a hidden ability, improving accuracy

Base stats and EVs

Hoothoot's base stats are modest. Its maximum potential lies mainly in its HP and Special Defense, allowing it to hold up against certain special attacks. However, its Attack and physical Defense remain low, making it fragile against direct attacks.

The EVs gained by defeating or using Hoothoot are primarily oriented toward HP, which can be interesting for players looking to optimize defensive teams early in the game.

Moves and TMs

Hoothoot has a varied list of moves from the very first levels. It naturally learns Normal- and Flying-type moves, but can also access more tactical moves via TM.

Notable moves

  • Confusion, useful against Fighting- and Poison-types

  • Echoed Voice, effective over time in battle

  • Uproar, a powerful sound-based attack later in progression

  • Defog, very useful for removing field hazards

Through TMs, Hoothoot can also learn protection and support moves, as well as certain Ghost-type moves such as Dream Eater, reinforcing its tactical value despite limited power.

Evolution and breeding

Hoothoot evolves into Noctowl starting at level 20. This evolution noticeably improves its stats, particularly in Special Defense and Special Attack, making it more viable in battle. For players wishing to complete their Pokédex entry, this evolution is quick and accessible.

Regarding eggs, Hoothoot belongs to the Flying egg group. It is compatible with several bird Pokémon, making breeding and the passing of specific moves easier.

Location and capture

Hoothoot is generally available on various routes, primarily at night. Capturing it is straightforward thanks to a decent encounter rate and a relatively low level during early encounters. It also appears in certain dark areas and in specific zones depending on the game.

In Pokémon GO, Hoothoot is regularly present during nocturnal or themed events, making it easy to obtain in order to complete a collection.

Pokémon cards and collecting

Hoothoot has several cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game. These cards often highlight its support role, with effects related to drawing, protection, or disrupting the opponent. For collectors, certain editions from the Johto era or from modern series are particularly sought after.

Thanks to its simple and recognizable design, Hoothoot remains a Pokémon appreciated by players and card enthusiasts alike.
