Detailed information
Overview of Monferno
Monferno is a Fire and Fighting dual-type Pokémon introduced in the fourth generation. It is known by its English name Monferno and its Japanese name モウカザル. This Pokémon is the direct evolution of Chimchar and represents an excellent balance between Speed, Attack, and offensive versatility for players progressing through Sinnoh.
In the Pokédex, Monferno is described as an agile fighter that uses the flames on its head and tail to intimidate its opponents. Its battle style relies on fast strikes, powerful Fire moves, and martial arts-inspired punching techniques.
Type and Strategic Weaknesses
Monferno has the dual Fire and Fighting type, giving it excellent offensive coverage against many opposing types. It is particularly effective against Steel, Ice, Grass, and Normal types.
Main weaknesses against Water, Ground, Flying, and Psychic types
Useful resistances against Steel, Fire, Ice, and Dark
Watch out for ranged Water and Ground attacks, which can reduce its HP very quickly
Stats and Battle Potential
Monferno's stats are balanced for a mid-stage Pokémon. Its Attack and Speed allow it to take the initiative in many battles, while its Defense remains decent without being exceptional.
Good Speed to strike before opponents
High physical Attack exploiting punches and kicks
Viable Special Attack for Fire moves such as Ember
Weaknesses on Special Defense against Psychic and Water
In battle, Monferno is often used as a fast sweeper during the adventure, especially between levels 20 and 36.
Key Moves, Attacks, and TMs
Monferno naturally learns very useful Fire and Fighting moves for gameplay. Its movepool is further enriched through TMs and HMs, boosting its versatility.
Flame Wheel and Ember for consistent Fire damage
Fire Punch and Low Sweep for Fighting-type attacks
Flare Blitz as a high-power move with a HP recoil trade-off
Protect and Fake Out for pace control in battle
Through TMs, Monferno can learn moves such as Flamethrower, Thunder Punch, or Ice Punch, allowing it to surprise certain opponents resistant to its Fire type.
Evolution and In-Game Use
Monferno evolves into Infernape from level 36 onward. This evolution greatly increases its overall power, Speed, and competitive potential. It is therefore recommended to keep it in the team until this transformation occurs.
During the Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Black, and White adventures (via transfer), Monferno remains a reliable choice for defeating Gyms and progressing efficiently without relying excessively on healing items.
Monferno in the Pokémon TCG
In the Pokémon TCG, Monferno appears on several cards focused on Speed and low-cost Fire attacks. These cards are often used in aggressive Fire decks or as a bridge before Infernape.
Fast attacks with a low Energy cost
Good synergy with Fire support cards
Interesting for decks built around gradual evolution
For collectors, certain Monferno cards from the Sinnoh generation are appreciated for their dynamic artwork and their direct link to Chimchar and Infernape.
