Overview of Malamar
Malamar is a Psychic and Dark-type Pokémon introduced in the sixth generation. Its English name is Malamar and its Japanese name is カラマネロ. It is the direct evolution of Inkay, obtained at a specific level through an original inversion mechanic that left a lasting impression on console players. Malamar is immediately recognizable by its inverted body, its hypnotic tentacles, and its highly atypical fighting style.
In the Pokédex, Malamar carries the number 687. It is known for using powerful psychic waves to control its opponents. This identity is directly reflected in its gameplay, both in strategic battle and in the main games where its potential relies on high mental abilities and excellent synergy with certain abilities.
Type, Weaknesses, and Resistances
Malamar possesses a combination of Psychic and Dark types that makes it unique. This dual type allows it to completely nullify certain attacks and exploit interesting resistances depending on the battle context.
Complete immunity to Psychic-type attacks
Major weakness to Bug-type attacks
Weakness to Fairy-type attacks
Resistance to Ghost-type attacks
Resistance to Dark-type attacks
This type combination requires careful matchup reading, especially in competitive battle where a well-placed Bug-type attack can be devastating.
Base Stats and EV Potential
Malamar has balanced base stats oriented toward Attack and Special Defense. Its Speed remains average but can be exploited through moves that invert stat order.
Decent HP to hold on over time
Solid Attack suited for physical moves
Usable Special Attack depending on the set
Stable Defense and Special Defense
Average but manipulable Speed
In EVs, Malamar is often optimized in Attack and HP or in Attack and Special Defense depending on the chosen nature. IVs also play a key role in maximizing its damage under certain battle conditions.
Key Moves and Attacks
Malamar's movepool is one of its greatest assets. It has powerful Psychic moves, effective Dark options, and control moves that fully exploit its hypnotic theme.
Psychic to deal heavy Psychic-type damage
Foul Play, which uses the opponent's Attack
Psyshock to target the opponent's Defense
Calm Mind to boost its stats
Encore to lock an opponent into a move
These moves allow for highly varied sets, both offensive and disruptive, suited to different battle formats.
Evolution and Inversion Mechanic
Malamar evolves from Inkay at a specific level, but only if a special condition is met. This evolution relies on a console inversion mechanic, requiring the player to flip the device at the moment of the level-up. This originality made Malamar memorable from its first appearance.
This pre-evolution partly explains its inverted design and its concept based on manipulation and confusion.
Use in Battle and in the Games
In the Pokémon games, Malamar is appreciated for its ability to surprise opponents. Its ability allows it to exploit unusual strategies, notably by inverting certain negative effects into bonuses. It is regularly used on teams focused on controlling the pace of battle.
Its weight and size have only a limited impact in battle, but reinforce its visual identity. In Sun and Moon, it benefits from a favorable environment for its Psychic and Dark moves, making it even more formidable in solo play and duels alike.
