General overview of Mega Malamar

This Mega form was officially revealed as part of the communication surrounding Legends: Z-A. The Pokémon was teased in a video published on September 4, 2025, then confirmed in an official trailer on September 10, 2025, following a promotional campaign titled "My Friend Malamar."

In the games, this evolution greatly improves Malamar's combat capabilities. The base stats increase, which boosts its strategic potential. Its Dark and Psychic typing allows it to use moves combining mental manipulation and offensive pressure. Thanks to its psychic powers and control capabilities, this Pokémon can dominate a battle by disrupting its opponent.

Physique and body transformation

When it reaches its Mega form, Malamar's body becomes much longer and more slender. Its coloration also evolves in a spectacular way. The characteristic dark purple gives way to a succession of colors ranging from purple to red, then orange, yellow, and green before ending in light blue and dark blue at the tip of the body.

Its former white fins that served as legs join together to form a single point. The upper parts of its arms transform into long pointed epaulettes resembling a coat, retaining the dark pink color typical of the original Pokémon.

The scythe-shaped fins become long purple ribbons ending in smaller fins. These extremities emit visible light, green on one side and pink on the other. These luminous effects play a central role in its mental manipulation capabilities.

The tentacles at the top of its head gather and intertwine to form a structure resembling a brain. This appearance highlights the central role of the brain and psychic powers in this Pokémon's abilities.

Psychic powers and battle capabilities

Mega Malamar uses its long arms and multicolored lights to hypnotize its opponents. Through these luminous effects, it can manipulate perception and disrupt the memories of its enemies. In the Pokédex of Legends: Z-A, it is explained that it can rewrite an opponent's memories and restructure their personality in order to control them.

In battle, this capability translates into strategies based on confusion and mental manipulation. Psychic moves can deal damage while disrupting the opponent. Its tentacles and fluid movements also allow it to maintain constant pressure.

Unlike its standard form, Mega Malamar can move by levitating. This capability reinforces its unsettling aspect and increases its mobility during a confrontation.

Evolution and the Malamar family

The evolutionary family begins with Inkay. This Pokémon evolves into Malamar starting at level 30 when the console is held upside down at the moment of leveling up in the game.

Once this evolution is obtained, Malamar can reach its Mega Evolution during battle through the Malamarite. This temporary transformation considerably boosts its stats and offensive capabilities.

There is no difference between male and female individuals of Mega Malamar. All share the same appearance and the same characteristics.

Shiny form

The shiny version of Mega Malamar alters several colors on its body. The areas that are normally pale purple take on a yellowish-grey hue. The tentacles on its head become brown-green with a yellow interior. The pink parts of the beak and shoulders also change and become red.

These visual differences make the shiny form easily identifiable for players looking to complete their Pokédex or obtain rare variants in the game.
