General overview of Larvitar

Larvitar is a Rock and Ground-type Pokémon introduced in the second generation. Its Japanese name is ヨーギラス. This small rocky Pokémon is known as the base stage of an extremely powerful evolutionary line, making it a highly sought-after target for players focused on battling and team optimization.

In the National Pokédex, Larvitar is classified as a Pokémon that lives in mountains and rocky areas. It feeds primarily on rocks and earth in order to develop its body, which explains its robust appearance despite its small size. From its earliest level, it shows high potential in Attack and Defense.

Type, stats, and combat potential

Larvitar has a dual Rock and Ground typing. This combination grants it good resistance against several types but also notable weaknesses, particularly against Water, Grass, Fighting, Ice, and Steel. In return, its Rock type allows it to take physical attacks fairly well from the early levels.

Larvitar's base stats lean toward Attack and Defense, with decent HP for a first-stage Pokémon. Its Speed remains low, which strongly influences its role in battle. It is often used as a future investment rather than an immediate fighter, especially in competitive play.

In terms of EVs and IVs, players generally prioritize Attack and Defense in order to maximize its power once its final evolution is reached. The ideal nature will depend on the intended final role, but a nature that boosts Attack or Defense is commonly recommended.

Moves, abilities, and gameplay strategy

Larvitar learns effective physical moves early on, such as Bite, Mud-Slap, and Rock Slide. These moves take advantage of its solid Attack stat and allow it to handle several opposing types throughout the main adventure.

As it levels up, it can learn Crunch and Ancient Power, strengthening its usefulness in battle. Despite its Ground typing, it does not have immediate access to Earthquake, but this move becomes a strategic cornerstone later in its evolutionary line.

In solo play, Larvitar is most interesting for its progressive power growth. In competitive battling, it is rarely used as-is, but remains indispensable for reaching its final evolution, which is renowned for its Sandstorm ability and impressive Defense.

Evolution and place in the line

Larvitar evolves at level 30 into Pupitar, then reaches its final form at level 55. This late evolution is compensated by exceptional power once the final stage is reached. The evolutionary line is often associated with a strategy based on sand and physical dominance.

The Mega Evolution option for its final form further increases the appeal of catching and training Larvitar from the start of the game. It is a Pokémon often chosen by players looking for a strong team for the late game.

Collectible cards and availability

In the Trading Card Game, Larvitar regularly appears as a basic card with simple moves consistent with its Rock typing. Some editions highlight its connection to legends and its future power, which sometimes influences its price depending on condition and rarity.

Larvitar is available in several Pokémon game versions, often in mountainous or rocky areas with a moderate encounter rate. Its popularity remains high among collectors and players looking to build a team focused on power and resilience.
