General overview of Lampent
Lampent is a Fire and Ghost-type Pokémon introduced in the fifth generation. Its French name is Mélancolux and its Japanese name is ランプラー. It represents a haunted lantern capable of absorbing souls, a concept directly tied to its dual type and its particular strategic role in battles.
In the Pokédex, Lampent is known to appear near hospitals or places where death lingers. It feeds on the souls of people on the verge of passing away, which reinforces its unsettling yet fitting image with its spectral abilities. For players, Lampent is most appreciated as a key stepping stone before its final evolution into Chandelure.
Base stats and battle profile
Lampent has stats oriented toward Special Attack. Its base stat spread clearly prioritizes offensive power at the expense of physical Defense and Speed. Its HP remains decent for an intermediate Pokémon, allowing it to absorb a few hits while hitting hard.
Decent base HP for an offensive role
High Special Attack for its level
Low defenses requiring good positioning
Average Speed, often lower than that of fast sweepers
Competitively, Lampent is often used as a Special Attacker or as a status setter thanks to Will-O-Wisp. It can weaken opposing physical attackers while exerting constant pressure with its Fire and Shadow-type attacks.
Types, weaknesses, and resistances
Thanks to its Fire and Ghost typing, Lampent benefits from useful resistances against Bug, Steel, Grass, Ice, and Fairy-type attacks. It is immune to Normal and Fighting-type attacks, giving it tactical switching opportunities.
However, it remains vulnerable to Water, Rock, Ground, Ghost, and Dark-type attacks. These weaknesses must be anticipated, especially in competitive play where damage can be high against well-prepared opponents.
Key moves and attacks
Lampent's movepool is one of its main assets. It has powerful Fire moves and very useful Ghost attacks to hit a wide variety of Pokémon. Shadow Ball is an indispensable move for exploiting its Special Attack.
Shadow Ball for reliable Ghost damage
Flamethrower or Fire Blast for the Fire type
Will-O-Wisp to reduce the opponent's physical Attack
Hex or Energy Ball depending on tactical needs
These moves allow Lampent to adapt to multiple playstyles, whether in singles, doubles, or more advanced strategic formats.
Evolutions and long-term value
Lampent evolves into Chandelure when exposed to a Dusk Stone. This evolution marks an enormous gain in power and transforms Lampent into one of the best Special Attackers of the Fire and Ghost type. For this reason, many players choose to train it carefully before evolving it.
Managing its nature, IVs, and level before evolution is essential to maximize its potential. A Special Attack-oriented nature is generally preferred to get the most out of its offensive moves.
Pokémon TCG cards and popularity
Lampent exists in several Pokémon cards, often appreciated for their dark artwork and spectral flames. Some cards highlight its connection to souls and its luminous body, making them popular among collectors. Although less sought after than Chandelure, Lampent remains an interesting card in Unova-related sets.
For both players and collectors, Lampent represents an excellent balance between atmosphere, strategic utility, and evolutionary value.
