Overview of Kyogre

Kyogre is a Pokémon iconic legendary from the Hoenn region, known for its absolute dominion over the oceans and its Water-type power. Its name is identical in English, Kyogre, and it is called カイオーガ in Japanese. In the Pokédex, Kyogre is described as a creature capable of expanding the seas through the torrential rain it summons thanks to its ancient grace.

Kyogre belongs to the Water type and has no conventional evolution. It represents a primal force of nature and plays a central role in several main-series games. Its imposing size, great weight in kg, and broad fins make it a formidable opponent in battles and raids alike.

Type, Form, and Traits

Kyogre is exclusively Water type, giving it excellent offensive and defensive coverage. It is particularly effective against Fire, Ground, and Rock types. However, it remains vulnerable to Grass and Electric-type attacks.

Kyogre has a special form called Primal Kyogre, also known as its Primal or Primal Reversion form. This alpha form greatly increases its base stats and changes its ability, further boosting its Water attacks. Primal Kyogre is highly sought after in recent games and in high-level competitive battles.

Stats and Battle Foundation

Kyogre's base stats are geared toward an extremely high Special Attack, along with very solid HP. Its Defense and Special Defense allow it to absorb considerable damage, making it a cornerstone of teams focused on field control.

  • High HP suited to long battles

  • Massive Special Attack ideal for Water moves

  • Good overall Defense despite average Speed

In games such as Black, White, Ruby, Sapphire, and their later versions, Kyogre is often considered one of the best legendary Pokémon in battle thanks to its raw power.

Moves and Notable Abilities

Kyogre has a wide range of Water-centered moves, as well as Ice and Electric moves to cover its weaknesses. Hydro Pump is one of its signature moves, dealing colossal damage — especially in the rain.

  • Hydro Pump for maximum power

  • Surf for a more reliable battle option

  • Blizzard to counter Grass and Dragon types

  • Ice Beam and Aurora Beam depending on the generation

  • Thunderbolt usable in the rain without loss of accuracy

Thanks to its rain-related ability, Kyogre automatically boosts its Water attacks upon entering battle, making it fearsome from the very first turn.

Capture and Presence in the Games

Kyogre is generally catchable at a key moment in the story, often following a major narrative arc tied to the oceans and the balance of the world. Capturing it requires careful preparation, including weakening moves and appropriate Poké Balls.

In Pokémon GO, Kyogre appears mainly during Legendary Raids, with a Shiny version available during certain events. Its Primal Kyogre form is also introduced there as an extremely powerful form, highly prized for battles and high-level challenges.

Cards and Collection Value

Kyogre features prominently in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, particularly in expansions tied to Hoenn and the legendaries. Primal Kyogre and Kyogre ex cards are especially sought after for their high values and spectacular artwork showcasing its alpha form and dominion over the oceans.

For players and collectors alike, Kyogre remains an essential Pokémon thanks to its power, its iconic blue design, and its central role in the Pokémon universe.

Kyogre in the Metagame

In competitive play, Kyogre is often used as a special offensive pivot. Its nature is generally chosen to maximize its Special Attack or improve its Defense depending on the strategy, confirming its place among the most influential legendaries across all generations.
