Overview of Hippowdon
Hippowdon is a Ground-type Pokémon, known in English as Hippowdon and in Japanese as ヒポドン. It is the direct evolution of Hippopotas, an iconic Pokémon of desert environments and sandstorms. Hippowdon is particularly appreciated by players for its high Defense, its ability to control the battlefield, and its excellent synergy with sand-based teams.
In the Pokédex, Hippowdon is described as a massive and extremely heavy Pokémon capable of triggering violent sandstorms the moment it enters battle. This natural aptitude makes it a strategic cornerstone in many competitive formats, notably for setting traps and gradually wearing down opponents.
Type, abilities, and resistances
Hippowdon is exclusively Ground type. This typing grants it a total immunity to Electric-type attacks and solid resistances against Rock and Poison types. In return, it shows marked weaknesses against Water, Grass, and Ice-type attacks, requiring careful planning before battles.
Its most emblematic ability automatically summons a sandstorm, strengthening sand-oriented teams and increasing the longevity of certain Steel or Ground-type partners. In battle, Hippowdon often acts as a defensive wall capable of absorbing heavy damage while wearing down the opponent.
Base stats and useful information
Hippowdon has base stats centered on Defense and HP. Its physical power is decent, while its Speed remains low, placing it among the heavy and slow Pokémon. Its very high weight and large size reinforce its image as an impenetrable wall.
This Pokémon is frequently used to optimize EV investment in Defense and HP, in order to maximize its overall resilience. Its nature is often chosen to boost Defense or Special Defense depending on the set being played.
Moves and strategic abilities
Hippowdon has a wide range of Ground-type moves and utility abilities. Earthquake remains its flagship attack, offering excellent power and reliability. It can also use Fire Fang to surprise Steel or Grass-type opponents that might try to counter it.
Among its other options, one finds Bite, Body Slam, and various TM-learned moves, allowing Hippowdon to adapt to several battle styles. It also excels at setting traps and controlling the pace of the battle through support moves.
Evolution, capture, and presence in the games
Hippowdon is the final evolution of Hippopotas, obtained from a certain level. The catch rate remains moderate, but its presence in the games of the Sinnoh region — notably Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Sun, and Moon — makes it a relatively accessible Pokémon for patient players.
In Pokémon GO, Hippowdon is primarily sought after for its defensive stats and its utility in specific raids. It often appears in desert biomes or during events tied to sand.
Hippowdon in cards and the collection
Hippowdon has several collectible cards that highlight its raw power and its defensive role. These cards are appreciated for their imposing artwork and their consistency with the desert theme. Certain shiny or alternative versions can reach notable prices depending on condition and rarity.
Whether in battle or in a collection, Hippowdon remains an essential Pokémon for fans of defensive strategies and teams built around the sandstorm weather.
