General overview of Gyarados

Gyarados is the direct evolution of Magikarp at level 20 and remains one of the most iconic Pokémon for players. Known by its English name Gyarados and its Japanese name ギャラドス, it combines raw power, an excellent battle presence, and a formidable appearance that is immediately recognizable. Its Water/Flying typing can surprise, particularly for strategic interactions in the main games as well as in Pokémon GO. Its classic blue form and its red variant, famous thanks to the Lake of Rage, are among the most memorable appearances in the franchise.

Characteristics and type in the Pokédex

In the Pokédex, Gyarados has a number that varies by generation, but it always retains its identity as a giant serpentine Pokémon capable of razing a village when it flies into a fury. Its Water/Flying typing gives it particular weaknesses, notably against Electric attacks at ×4, but it retains excellent utility thanks to its strong Attack, decent Speed, and very solid Defense. Its imposing size makes it an intimidating ally on any team.

Evolution and how to obtain Gyarados

To obtain a Gyarados, the most common method remains evolving Magikarp at level 20. In many games, Magikarp can be encountered through fishing, on various routes, seas, and lakes. Once evolved, the Pokémon immediately gains in power and becomes a major asset for progressing through the adventure, especially thanks to TMs and HMs it can learn, such as Waterfall or Surf depending on the generation. In Pokémon GO, obtaining it requires a large number of Magikarp Candies, but the effort is well worth it.

Moves and strategic roles

Gyarados has a wide range of attacks, including Bite, Hydro Pump, Waterfall, Outrage, or even Dragon and Ice moves depending on the version. Both the blue form and the red form can become a genuine threat in battle thanks to its very high base Attack. It is particularly effective against many types thanks to its varied offensive coverage. In more recent games, its ability to learn Dragon Dance lets it reach an extremely dangerous competitive level, making it a feared sweeper.

Notable moves

  • Waterfall – a very reliable Water attack frequently used in competitive play

  • Bite – useful early in the game

  • Hydro Pump – enormous power but risky accuracy

  • Outrage – a devastating Dragon attack after a boost

Base stats

Gyarados is built for offense, with an exceptional Attack and decent Defense that allow it to hold its own in battle. Even though it is a Flying type, it cannot actually fly physically in the games, but this typing grants it an immunity to Ground. Its high weight and imposing size reinforce its image as a legendary Pokémon in popular culture, even though it is not classified as such in the Pokédex.

Utility in video games and in battle

It is rare for a complete team not to include Gyarados at least once during a playthrough. In Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond, Pearl, Black, and White, it always retains a decisive role. Its combination of Attack, bulk, and access to Dragon Dance makes it one of the best offensive Pokémon in the long run. In Pokémon GO, its Water attacks make it a very strong attacker for raids and certain battle leagues.

Gyarados in the Pokémon Trading Card Game

Gyarados cards are often focused on raw power, with high-damage attacks and a significant energy cost. Some editions offer impressive artwork, especially the shiny red versions, which are highly sought after by collectors. For TCG players, a well-built Gyarados card can become a serious threat thanks to its devastating attacks.

Appearances, locations, and special features

Gyarados can be encountered in certain special areas when Magikarp appears in large numbers, or through events such as the famous red Gyarados at the Lake of Rage. It remains a Pokémon appreciated by players seeking a powerful companion, whether to complete the Pokédex, dominate in battle, or enrich a card collection. Its presence in almost every generation confirms its iconic status.
