Detailed information

Overview of Mega Gyarados

Gyarados is originally a Water and Flying-type Pokémon. When it activates its Mega Evolution, it becomes Water and Dark type. This new form greatly increases its damage output and its ability to take hits thanks to improved HP and Defense. In the Pokédex, Mega Gyarados retains Gyarados's number but gains additional information about its heightened power and even more violent temperament.

Its size is approximately 6.5 m and it weighs over 300 kg. In its shiny version, it takes on a dark red hue that is highly sought after by players during special events and in raids.

Stats and battle performance

Base stats

Mega Gyarados's stats are oriented toward Attack. Its Attack and HP increase significantly compared to standard Gyarados. Its Speed remains decent, allowing it to strike multiple times with great force. Its base stats make it a fearsome attacker both in competitive battle and in Pokémon GO.

  • Very high Attack to maximize damage

  • Good additional Defense and Special Defense

  • Solid Speed for a Mega Pokémon

At level 20 in a Pokémon GO raid, it can be caught with a high CP. With rainy or foggy weather boost, its Water or Dark moves gain a bonus. At level 40 or level 50, with additional Candy, it reaches an impressive maximum power.

Weaknesses and resistances

Thanks to its Water and Dark typing, Mega Gyarados loses its double weakness to Electric but becomes vulnerable to Fairy, Fighting, Bug, and Grass types. Choosing the right nature and distributing EVs carefully is essential to optimize its resistance against these threats.

Best moves for Mega Gyarados

In the main games

In competitive battle, the most effective moves include:

  • Bite to take advantage of the Dark typing

  • Hydro Pump as a powerful special Water move

  • Dragon Dance to raise Attack and Speed

  • Waterfall for a reliable physical set

These moves allow you to make the most of its Mega form and deal massive damage in just a few turns. After a Dragon Dance, it can sweep an entire team if no solid counter is present.

In Pokémon GO

In Pokémon GO, Mega Gyarados is available during special days and Mega events. In raids, it excels as a Water attacker with Waterfall and Hydro Pump, or as a Dark attacker with Bite. Its Mega Evolution also provides a damage bonus to other Water and Dark Pokémon on the team.

Mega Gyarados and the Pokémon cards

Cards and notable series

In the Pokémon card game, Mega Gyarados appears in various versions such as Gyarados-EX or in Turbo Breakthrough cards. Some cards feature very high HP and an attack capable of breaking through the opponent's defenses.

Mega Gyarados cards are sought after for their spectacular artwork and their potential in Water decks. In EX or ultra series, they offer massive damage in exchange for a high energy cost. The shiny version particularly attracts collectors.

Whether in competitive battle, in raids, or in Pokémon card collecting, Mega Gyarados remains an iconic evolution from the original generation and an essential page for any player looking to maximize their strength on the field.
