Detailed information

Overview of Grumpig

Grumpig is a Pokémon of the Psychic type that appeared in the third generation. Its English name is Grumpig and its Japanese name is ブーピッグ. It is the direct evolution of Spoink, obtained when Spoink reaches a certain level. Grumpig is easily recognized by its bulky body, the black pearls it uses to channel its psychic powers, and its more imposing appearance compared to its previous form.

In the Pokédex, Grumpig is described as a Pokémon capable of controlling the mental waves of its opponents through its pearls. These pearls also help protect it against certain Fire and Ground attacks, making it an interesting choice for Trainers looking for a defensive and strategic Psychic Pokémon.

Type and base characteristics

Grumpig is a pure Psychic type. This typing gives it good resistance against Fighting and Psychic attacks, but notable vulnerabilities to Dark, Bug, and Ghost moves. Its balance between special power and Defense makes it a valued Pokémon for tactical battles.

  • Primary type: Psychic

  • National Pokédex number: 326

  • Average height: approximately 0.9 m

  • Weight: approximately 71.5 kg

  • Category: Manipulate Pokémon

Stats and useful EVs

Grumpig has a stat spread oriented toward Special Defense and Special Attack. It is not the fastest, but it compensates with a good ability to absorb special damage and hit back with powerful Psychic attacks.

  • Decent HP for sustained presence

  • High Special Defense

  • Solid Special Attack

  • Average Speed

In terms of EVs, Grumpig is often optimized with investment in Special Defense and HP, to maximize its ability to hold out against Psychic or Fire attacks in extended battles.

Notable moves and abilities

Grumpig has a wide range of Psychic moves allowing it to adapt to many situations. It can learn powerful moves such as Psychic, Charge Beam, and Shadow Ball via TM. These attacks provide good coverage against various opposing types.

  • Classic high-power Psychic attacks

  • Support moves based on mental waves

  • Access to Ghost-type attacks for coverage

This moveset makes Grumpig effective in both solo battles and more defensive strategies, especially against specially oriented Pokémon.

Evolution and availability

Grumpig is the evolution of Spoink, obtained at level 32. It can generally be found in regions like Hoenn, particularly in Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald versions. Its catch rate is reasonable for an evolved Pokémon, making it easy to add to a team.

In some more recent generations, Grumpig can also be obtained through breeding or specific events, making it accessible even outside its native environment.

Grumpig in cards and Pokémon GO

In the Trading Card Game, Grumpig is often depicted as a control- and defense-focused Psychic Pokémon. Its cards highlight its pearls and its psychic attacks, with effects that disrupt the opponent.

In Pokémon GO, Grumpig is used primarily for its Psychic attacks and decent endurance. It finds a place in some Gym battles or mid-tier raids, though it remains more situational than other more offensive Psychic Pokémon.
