General overview of Mega Garchomp

This Mega form was officially revealed in the October 2013 issue of CoroCoro Comics magazine, at the same time as several other major Mega Evolutions such as those of Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise and Mewtwo. Mega Garchomp represents a temporary transformation used during battle when a Trainer holds a Garchompite.

In the games, this form allows certain base stats of the Pokémon to increase considerably. Mega Garchomp thus becomes an extremely powerful fighter capable of dealing heavy damage thanks to its Dragon and Ground type moves. This form is particularly used by players who wish to exploit its great offensive power in competitive battles.

Appearance of the Mega form

The Mega form greatly alters Garchomp's appearance. The fins on its arms merge with its claws to form large, extremely sharp red scythes. These blades accentuate the dangerous appearance of the Pokémon and illustrate the power unleashed by Mega Evolution.

A row of sharp teeth also appears on each side of its torso. Additional red teeth protrude from its knees, giving this form an even more aggressive appearance. The yellow area on the lower part of its belly has a slightly different shape compared to the standard form.

The lower part of the body remains relatively streamlined, while the upper body becomes more massive and square-shaped, particularly at the shoulders and jaw. The two protrusions at the tip of its tail take on a crescent shape.

Differences and Shiny form

There is no difference between male and female individuals of this species in Mega form. Players therefore cannot distinguish a male from a female based on appearance alone.

When Mega Garchomp appears in its Shiny form, the colors change noticeably. The blue part of its body becomes purple, the red areas take on a pink hue and the yellow part of its belly becomes slightly darker. This version is particularly sought after by collectors and players who enjoy catching rare Pokémon.

Evolution and Garchomp family

Mega Garchomp is obtained when Garchomp uses Mega Evolution with a Garchompite during battle. This transformation only lasts for the duration of the fight.

Since Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Garchomp can also Mega Evolve into Mega Garchomp Z using a Garchompite Z. This new evolution belongs to the same evolutionary family as Gible.

Ability and use in battle

Mega Garchomp's ability is Sand Force. This ability boosts the power of Rock, Ground and Steel type moves when a sandstorm is active on the field. In certain strategies, players use this mechanic to maximize the damage of their moves over several turns.

Thanks to its high base stats and offensive power, Mega Garchomp can play a major role in battle. Its strength allows it to threaten many opposing Pokémon, especially when used in a team built around the sand weather condition.

Pokédex entries

The various Pokédex entries describe Mega Garchomp as a creature that has become more violent and brutal after Mega Evolution. The energy released by this transformation modifies its wing-arms, which become large scythes capable of tearing through the ground and its opponents.

In several entries, it is explained that the Pokémon is furious at having lost its wings in exchange for these blades. This transformation heightens its aggressiveness and drives it to attack with even greater violence than in its standard form.
