Overview of Ditto
Ditto, known in Japanese as メタモン, is a Pokémon unique in its kind, capable of completely altering its form thanks to its highly unstable cellular structure. In the Pokédex, Ditto holds a special place because it has no evolution, no gender, and reproduces asexually, making it one of the most useful Pokémon for breeding in the main games. Its type is Normal, and its primary ability consists in instantly copying the appearance, moves, and stats of its opponent thanks to its Transform ability.
For players, Ditto is often used in competitive play and breeding. Its base form is a small gelatinous mass, blue or purple depending on the game version. A Shiny version exists, turning it a lighter blue. Its nature, Pokédex number, values, and IVs take on particular importance when it comes to breeding or dedicated catches for optimization.
Key characteristics and information
Ditto has a very low base stat total, with deliberately minimal values. Its HP, Attack, Defense, and Sp. Atk are intentionally low, since its main role is not direct combat but transformation. At the competitive level, it becomes interesting only when it copies an opponent through its special ability Imposter (hidden ability). This ability allows it, immediately upon switching in, to copy the opponent's form, stats, and moves, which can turn a match around in certain competitive formats.
In the games, catching Ditto can be tricky due to its moderate catch rate. It is often found in specific areas such as caves, dedicated routes, or the mountain associated with its habitat in different generations, notably in Kanto, Johto, or Alola. Pokémon GO players can also encounter it, but only after it has transformed into another Pokémon, which complicates obtaining it.
Usefulness in breeding
One of Ditto's greatest strengths is breeding. Thanks to its unique molecular structure, this Pokémon can produce eggs with almost any other Pokémon, regardless of form or move, except for certain exceptions such as Legendary Pokémon and Pokémon that cannot breed. This makes it an indispensable element for obtaining perfect Pokémon with optimized IVs, ideal natures, and inherited moves. Players often use a Ditto from a foreign-language version for the Masuda Method, significantly increasing the chances of obtaining a Shiny Pokémon.
Moves and abilities
In terms of moves, Ditto only learns a single move: Transform. This move allows it to fully imitate the opponent, copying its moves and combat structure. Its moveset is therefore limited but perfectly suited to its nature as a copycat Pokémon. No TM or HM is useful to it, as it is designed solely to copy and adapt its style to that of its opponent.
In-game information and availability
Ditto appears in all main generations since Red and Blue. It can be found in many games, whether in the Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond, Pearl, Sun, Moon, or more recent editions. In certain titles, notably in raids or specific areas, high-level Ditto are available to facilitate breeding or competitive play.
For players looking for a competitive Ditto, the list of recommended natures depends on the role they want to assign it. However, since it copies the opponent's stats, optimizing its IVs and hidden ability remains the priority. A Ditto with Imposter immediately becomes capable of reacting upon entering battle, while the classic version, requiring the use of Transform, needs one turn of preparation.
