Pokémon Cyndaquil
Overview of Cyndaquil
Cyndaquil is a Fire-type Pokémon originating from the Johto region. Its Japanese name is ヒノアラシ. This small hedgehog-mouse is recognizable thanks to the flames it can project from its back, forming a natural defense whenever it feels threatened. In the Pokédex, Cyndaquil appears as number 155. Its height is approximately 0.5 m with a weight of about 7.9 kg, making it a lightweight Pokémon, quick to train and very popular in the early stages of an adventure.
Type, evolution, and useful information
A pure Fire type, Cyndaquil evolves into Quilava and then into Typhlosion at a certain level, a classic progression for a Johto starter. This line offers fast and powerful Fire attacks, with an excellent ability to sweep Gym battles involving Bug, Steel, or Grass types. Players also appreciate its access to moves like Ember, Flame Wheel, and Blaze, useful on early routes as well as in tougher battles.
Its design based on a small hedgehog makes it a fragile Pokémon defensively, but very decent in Special Attack. The base stats favor Speed and Special Attack, allowing you to opt for an offensive set from the earliest levels. It remains vulnerable to Water, Ground, and Rock attacks, however, which requires smart switch management during the adventure.
Moves, abilities, and levels
Cyndaquil learns several Fire moves early on, notably Ember from the very first levels. Players can then teach it various TMs to strengthen its offensive coverage. Fire-type moves benefit from the Blaze ability, which increases their power when its HP becomes low. Physical attacks are not its strong suit, but options like Fire Spin or Rollout exist in certain generations.
At level 15, it starts to become much more self-sufficient in battle. At level 20 or 25 depending on the game, its attacks become powerful enough to eliminate more robust opponents. At higher levels, it makes an excellent mid-game Fire Pokémon until you obtain Typhlosion.
Cyndaquil in the games and in Pokémon GO
In Pokémon GO, Cyndaquil has interesting CP for a Fire starter, with a decent max CP once fully powered up. The stat chart shows a decent Attack but a rather low Defense, making it most useful in low-level raids or as a backup for beginner players. Its catch rate remains accessible, and it can be found in Eggs or during certain events, notably those centered on the Johto region.
In the main games, it remains a solid choice for a balanced adventure. Players who want a combat style based on Speed and raw power will find Cyndaquil to be an excellent partner. Its Shiny form, with slightly different hues, is highly sought after by collectors.
Notes for cards and collectors
On the card side, Cyndaquil appears regularly in series featuring the Johto starters. Cyndaquil cards often show its flaming back, illustrating its characteristic flames. Some editions offer holographic versions popular among collectors. Its starter status ensures a regular presence in themed decks and anniversary series.
Additional information and various details
Cyndaquil is inspired by the hedgehog and the mouse, two animals associated with discretion and speed. It sometimes rolls up to protect itself, a posture visible in several game animations. Its nature greatly influences its performance, particularly in builds using Special Attack. Players can optimize its set with well-distributed EVs and an appropriate held item.
Its appearance in Pokémon Legends: Arceus also gives it a Fire/Ghost variant at the final evolution stage, reinforcing its strategic interest for fans seeking a more original Fire line. This change does not affect Cyndaquil itself, however, which remains centered on its classic Fire typing.
