General overview of Croagunk
Croagunk is a Poison and Fighting type Pokémon introduced in the fourth generation. Its English name is Croagunk and its Japanese name is グレッグル. This Pokémon is recognizable by its arrogant posture, its venom-filled puffed cheeks and its provocative attitude in battle. It is the direct pre-evolution of Toxicroak, making it an interesting choice to train from the early levels in order to obtain a versatile offensive Pokémon.
In the Pokédex, Croagunk is often described as a toxic Pokémon capable of producing different poisons depending on the situation. It favors humid, swampy or water-adjacent areas, which explains its natural resistance to certain types. Its Poison and Fighting combination offers a unique profile, both in strategy and in progression through the games.
Type, weaknesses and resistances
Croagunk has the dual Poison and Fighting type. This combination grants it several interesting resistances, notably against Fighting, Poison, Rock, Bug and Dark types. However, it remains vulnerable to very common types in the games such as Psychic, Ground and Flying, which requires anticipating counters during important battles.
In strategy, it is often used as an offensive support Pokémon, capable of poisoning the opponent while dealing direct damage with Fighting attacks. Its Poison type also allows it to absorb certain toxic attacks without suffering a status condition.
Base stats and potential
Croagunk's base stats are balanced without being exceptional. Its strengths lie in its decent Attack and Special Attack, combined with average Speed. Its HP and Defense remain modest, making it fragile against powerful attacks, particularly of the Psychic or Ground type.
Decent HP for a base Pokémon
Effective Attack for exploiting the Fighting type
Sufficient Speed to outpace certain opponents
Limited Defense and Special Defense
With good IVs and suitable training, Croagunk can become a surprising Pokémon in the early and mid-game, capable of applying constant pressure through venom and residual damage.
Notable moves and abilities
Croagunk has a wide choice of Poison and Fighting oriented attacks. Among the most used, one finds Poison Jab, Venoshock, Low Sweep and Sludge Bomb. These moves either deal direct damage or poison the opponent to progressively drain its HP.
It can also learn moves via TMs such as Taunt, Protect or Toxic, reinforcing its role as a nuisance in battle. Certain attacks of Fire or Water type can complete its moveset depending on the game, offering additional coverage against specific types.
Use in battle and in the games
In the Pokémon games, Croagunk is often available quite early, making it an excellent choice for a Fighting-oriented team. Its catch rate is reasonable and it generally appears in humid areas or specific routes. It is effective against many opponents thanks to its Fighting type, particularly against Steel, Rock or Dark Pokémon.
In strategic play, it is mainly used before its evolution or in limited formats. Once evolved into Toxicroak, its potential increases greatly. Croagunk nonetheless remains appreciated for its aggressive playstyle, based on Poison, pressure and provocation.
Size, weight and additional information
Croagunk stands approximately 0.7 meters tall and weighs around 23 kilograms. Its small size contrasts with its dominant attitude and aggressive behavior. In collectible cards, it is often depicted in a defiant pose, highlighting its Fighting and toxic side.
Whether for completing a Pokédex, building a balanced team or collecting cards, Croagunk remains a memorable Pokémon thanks to its design, its original type and its effectiveness in battle.
