Overview of Archeops

Archeops is a Rock and Flying-type Pokémon introduced in the fifth generation, originating from the Unova region. It is known by the English name Archeops and the Japanese name アーケオス. Archeops is the direct evolution of Archen, a fossil Pokémon revived from the Plume Fossil. Its design draws heavily from feathered dinosaurs, making it an iconic Pokémon embodying the link between ancient species and modern birds.

In the Pokédex, Archeops is often described as extremely fast and powerful in Attack, but suffering from a major strategic weakness tied to its ability. This Pokémon is primarily built for offensive battle, with very high base stats for a non-legendary Pokémon, which attracts many competitive players.

Type, form, and general characteristics

Archeops has a dual Rock and Flying typing. This combination gives it access to very powerful attacks while exposing it to several important weaknesses. Its form is unique and has neither a regional form nor an alternate form. It is a large Pokémon with broad wings and sharp claws adapted for aerial combat.

  • - Primary type: Rock

  • - Secondary type: Flying

  • - Height: approximately 1.4 m

  • - Weight: around 32 kg

This type combination makes Archeops vulnerable to Rock, Steel, Water, Electric, and Ice attacks, which must be taken into account when building a balanced team.

Base stats and battle potential

Archeops stands out for its very high base stats in Attack and Speed. Its total stat value places it among the most offensive fossil Pokémon. However, its HP and Defense are more fragile, making it reliant on an aggressive strategy.

  • HP: average base

  • Attack: very high

  • Defense: low

  • Special Attack: decent

  • Special Defense: low

  • Speed: very high

In terms of IVs and EVs, Archeops is generally optimized with maximum investment in Attack and Speed to fully capitalize on its offensive potential. It is rarely used as a defensive Pokémon.

Abilities and strategic impact

The main strategic point of Archeops lies in its ability Defeatist. When its HP drops below 50%, its Attack and Special Attack stats are halved. This ability imposes a risky playstyle, where the player must aim to deal as much damage as possible before taking hits from opponents.

This mechanic makes Archeops formidable at the start of a battle but far less effective late in the match. In competitive play, it is often used as a lead or as a fast-pressure Pokémon.

Learned moves and notable abilities

Archeops has a wide selection of very powerful physical moves, taking advantage of its Rock and Flying typing. It can learn moves by leveling up, TMs, and HMs.

  • Stone Edge

  • Rock Slide

  • Acrobatics

  • Crunch

  • Ancient Power

  • Aerial Ace

These moves allow it to cover many opposing types and exploit its high Speed. In Pokémon GO, Archeops is also appreciated for its fast damage output, though its fragility limits its effectiveness in extended raids.

Obtaining, catch rate, and breeding

Archeops cannot be caught directly in the wild in most versions. It is obtained solely by evolving Archen at level 37. The catch rate remains standard for a fossil Pokémon, but requires good preparation given its power.

Regarding breeding, Archeops belongs to the Flying egg group. It can pass down certain moves through breeding, allowing its moveset to be optimized from hatching. Its use, however, remains primarily geared toward pure offensive combat rather than strategic breeding.
