Overview of Amoonguss
Amoonguss is a Grass and Poison-type Pokémon introduced in the fifth generation. Its English name is Amoonguss and its Japanese name is モロバレル. It is known for its deceptive appearance that resembles a Poké Ball, a central element of both its design and its strategic gameplay.
In the Pokédex, Amoonguss carries number 591. It is primarily found in the Unova region, where it often appears in grassy and humid areas. Its build is massive compared to its pre-evolution, giving it excellent endurance in battle.
Type and strategic role in battle
Thanks to its dual Grass and Poison typing, Amoonguss has a very interesting defensive profile. It resists Water, Electric, Fighting, and Fairy moves effectively, making it particularly useful against many common opponents in both PvE and PvP.
Its primary role is that of a defensive wall and disruptor. It is often used to inflict status conditions through its spore-based moves, while absorbing damage from opponents over time.
Base stats and potential
Amoonguss's base stats are clearly oriented toward HP and Defense. It has a very high HP total, allowing it to stay on the field for a long time. Its physical Defense is solid, while its Special Defense remains decent enough to absorb moderate special moves.
Its Attack and Special Attack are secondary, but sufficient to use fixed-damage or effect-based moves. Its Speed is low, which rarely makes it the first to act, but this downside is offset by its great durability.
Key moves and abilities
Amoonguss is best known for its status moves. Spore is one of its signature moves, capable of putting the opponent to sleep with a maximum accuracy rate. This move is extremely powerful in competitive play.
It can also learn moves such as Giga Drain to recover HP, Sludge Bomb to deal Poison damage, or Leaf Storm to catch more fragile opponents off guard. Access to various TMs and HMs further enhances its versatility.
Catch rate, level, and availability
Amoonguss is generally available in the wild from a certain level in Black and White as well as Black 2 and White 2. Its catch rate is moderate, sometimes requiring multiple attempts and the use of suitable Poké Balls.
It can be encountered between level 35 and level 40 depending on the area. It is also possible to obtain it by evolving Foongus starting at level 39, which remains the most reliable method for adding it to your team.
Use in cards and Pokémon GO
In the card game, Amoonguss is appreciated for cards focused on control and status effects. Its great endurance often translates into cards with high HP and disruptive abilities for the opponent.
In Pokémon GO, Amoonguss is used primarily in Gym defense thanks to its HP volume and its resistances. It is less effective in raids, but remains interesting for players looking for a sturdy and reliable Pokémon.
Height, weight, and additional information
Amoonguss stands about 60 cm tall and has a relatively high weight, consistent with its massive giant-mushroom appearance. Its design reinforces its identity as a defensive and deceptive Pokémon.
It is compatible with breeding via Eggs and can inherit useful moves depending on its set. Its nature strongly influences its effectiveness, especially when it boosts Defense or HP, making it a lasting strategic choice for many players.
