General overview of Altaria

Altaria is a Dragon and Flying type Pokémon introduced in the third generation. It is the direct evolution of Swablu and stands out for its majestic appearance, with large wings resembling clouds. Its English name is Altaria and its Japanese name is チルタリス. This Pokémon is particularly appreciated by players for its defensive versatility and by collectors for its highly sought-after cards.

Altaria is often associated with the sky and weather, using wind and air as natural weapons. Its calm temperament and protective nature make it an interesting Pokémon both in strategic battles and on balanced teams. In the Pokédex, it is described as capable of singing soothing melodies while gliding very high in the sky.

Type, weaknesses and resistances

Altaria has a dual Dragon and Flying typing. This type gives it several useful resistances but also notable weaknesses to take into account during battles.

  • Main weaknesses against Ice, Rock and Dragon type attacks

  • Significant vulnerability to Fairy type attacks such as Dazzling Gleam

  • Resistances against Grass, Fire, Water and Fighting types

  • Immunity to Ground attacks thanks to its Flying type

This distribution makes Altaria a Pokémon capable of absorbing several attacks, but one that must avoid opponents specializing in Ice or Fairy type moves.

Stats and strategic potential

Altaria's base stats are balanced, with an emphasis on Special Defense and HP. It is not a pure attacker but excels in support or defensive wall roles. Its Speed remains average, which requires good anticipation in battle.

With a good EV spread, Altaria can be oriented toward a defensive role with increased HP and Defense, or toward a more offensive Dragon-based version. Its ability to stay on the field for a long time makes it an excellent choice in strategic battles.

Notable moves and capabilities

Altaria has a wide range of Dragon and Flying type moves, as well as very useful support capabilities. It can learn Dragon Breath, Dragon Pulse, Hurricane, Peck or Flamethrower to surprise certain opponents.

  • Dragon type moves like Dragon Breath and Dragon Pulse to deal heavy damage

  • Flying type moves using wind and air for battle control

  • Access to utility TMs like Dragon Dance or Mist

  • Support options with defensive and recovery moves

This diversity of moves allows Altaria to adapt to many situations, whether in solo battle or in more advanced strategies.

Mega Altaria and evolution

Altaria is Swablu's final evolution and can also Mega Evolve into Mega Altaria. In this form, it gains the Fairy type in addition to Dragon, profoundly altering its weaknesses and playstyle. This transformation considerably boosts its stats and makes it formidable in battle.

Mega Altaria is very popular for its increased power, reinforced Defense and access to devastating Fairy type attacks. This form is particularly popular in competitive formats and in games such as Ruby, Sapphire, Sun and their associated versions.

Altaria in the TCG and collecting

In the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Altaria has several notable cards, including highly sought-after EX and Mega versions. A Pokémon Altaria card in good condition can reach a high price depending on the edition and rarity.

Collectors appreciate Altaria for its elegant design and its direct connection to Swablu. It appears regularly in modern expansions as well as in older series, making it a Pokémon appreciated both for gameplay and for pure collecting.
