Aegislash is a Steel and Ghost-type Pokémon, known in English as Aegislash and in Japanese as ギルガルド. It was introduced in the sixth generation and immediately stands out for its unique gameplay based on form-changing in battle. Aegislash relies on a blade and shield concept, making it a strategic Pokémon highly appreciated in competitive play.

This Pokémon is the final evolution of Honedge and then Doublade. Its evolution does not depend on level but on the use of a Dusk Stone, allowing players to choose the exact moment to exploit its full battle potential.

Forms and battle mechanics

Shield Form

Shield Form is Aegislash's default form. It has extremely high Defense and Special Defense, allowing it to absorb many hits, even against very powerful moves. In return, its offensive stats are low in this form.

Blade Form

Blade Form triggers automatically when Aegislash uses an offensive move. In this form, its Attack and Special Attack power become very high, while its Defense drops sharply. This alternation between defense and offense is at the core of its gameplay.

Base stats and EV potential

Aegislash's base stats are atypical. In Shield Form, it has Defense and Special Defense among the highest of all Pokémon, making it ideal for stalling in battle. In Blade Form, its offensive values allow it to deal heavy damage, particularly through Ghost or Steel type moves.

In terms of EVs, Aegislash is often played with investment in HP to optimize its longevity, combined with EVs in Attack or Special Attack depending on the chosen set. This flexibility allows it to be viable in several battle styles.

Aegislash has a wide selection of effective moves. Among the most commonly used, Sacred Sword stands out for physical Steel-type damage, Shadow Ball for a special Ghost approach, or Shadow Claw for a physical set. Sucker Punch is also interesting for taking advantage of priority and surprising the opponent.

Its main weaknesses are Fire, Ground, Ghost, and Dark types. Poor anticipation of form changes can make it very vulnerable to these types.
