Detailed information

General overview of Wobbuffet

Wobbuffet is a Psychic-type Pokémon, known in Japanese as ソーナンス. It belongs to the second generation and holds a very special place in the Pokémon games thanks to its unique combat style, which is based on defense and counter-attacking rather than direct offense.

Wobbuffet is recognizable by its massive blue body and its black tail marked with symbols, often associated with a protective rune. Unlike the vast majority of Pokémon, it never freely chooses its moves, which makes it a truly unique case in the Pokédex. Its patient, passive behavior is at the heart of its battle strategy.

Pokédex information

In the Pokédex, Wobbuffet is described as a Pokémon capable of absorbing massive damage thanks to its very high HP. It appears in several games such as Ruby, Sapphire, Green, Pearl, HeartGold, and SoulSilver. Its Pokédex number remains consistent depending on the generation in question.

The entries note that Wobbuffet often seeks to shelter itself in calm locations such as lakes, including Lake Valor and Lake Verity. Its average size and relatively high weight reinforce its role as a defensive wall. It almost never flees a battle, preferring to wait for its opponent to make a mistake.

Stats and strategic profile

Wobbuffet's stats are atypical. It has very high HP, decent Defense, and solid Special Defense, but its Attack and Special Attack stats are virtually nonexistent. Its Speed is also very low, which strongly influences turn order in battle.

This stat distribution makes Wobbuffet a defensively oriented Pokémon, used primarily to trap opponents. In competitive play, it is often employed to counter powerful attacks and turn the tide of battle.

Moves and battle mechanics

Wobbuffet can only learn very few moves. It is famous for Mirror Coat and Counter, which reflect received damage back based on the type of the opposing move. It also has access to Safeguard and Destiny Bond, making every battle potentially decisive.

This intentional limitation makes Wobbuffet unpredictable. It forces the opponent to think before attacking, since a wrong decision can lead to an immediate defeat. It is particularly effective against ill-prepared Fire, Dark, and Ghost-type Pokémon.

Battle strengths

  • Very high HP allowing it to absorb heavy damage

  • Ability to reflect enemy attacks

  • Excellent counter Pokémon in many games

Weaknesses to know

  • Entirely dependent on the opponent's actions

  • Little flexibility in raids and fast-paced battles

  • Vulnerable to positioning and status strategies

Evolution and how to obtain

Wobbuffet is the direct evolution of Wynaut. This evolution occurs through leveling up, generally at level 15. No further evolution is known, which reinforces its role as a specialized rather than versatile Pokémon.

In several games, it can be encountered through the Safari Zone, the Poké Radar, or in certain specific areas after progressing through the story. Its encounter rate remains moderate, making it a sought-after Pokémon for strategic players.

Presence in games and Pokémon cards

Wobbuffet appears in many main games and spin-offs. It is sometimes associated with Team Rocket, which reinforces its image as a cunning and dangerous Pokémon. In the cards
