General overview of Wailord
Wailord is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in the third generation. It is known by its English name Wailord and its Japanese name ホエルオー. Evolved from Wailmer, this Pokémon is often referred to as the largest of Pokémon due to its impressive size, which surpasses that of the majority of creatures in the Pokédex. For players, Wailord is especially remarkable for its enormous base HP pool, which strongly influences its role in battle and its appeal in the trading card game.
Characteristics and useful stats
Wailord has a pure Water type, which grants it interesting resistances against Fire, Ice, and Water moves. In contrast, it remains vulnerable to Electric and Grass moves — an important point to keep in mind as a direct counter in battle. Its base HP is one of the highest in the game, but its Defense and Special Defense remain average, making it susceptible to powerful moves despite its apparent endurance.
Its exceptional size also has a symbolic impact in the games and on certain cards, where Wailord is often highlighted as a massive and dominant Pokémon. In terms of levels, it evolves from Wailmer at level 40, making it a relatively late evolution to plan for in a team.
Main moves and abilities
Wailord's movepool is built around powerful Water moves and support abilities. It can learn Surf, Hydro Pump, or Water Gun, making it a good user of HMs and TMs across several generations. Moves such as Blizzard or Ice Beam also allow it to cover its weakness against the Grass type, which is very useful in strategic battles.
Thanks to its high PP on certain moves and its enormous HP pool, Wailord can hold out for a long time during extended battles or raids. However, its limited Speed often forces the player to anticipate incoming hits or use items and abilities adapted to compensate.
Capture and encounter rate
Wailord's catch rate remains relatively standard for an evolved Pokémon, but it is rarely encountered in the wild. In most games, it is simpler to catch a Wailmer with an appropriate rod and then evolve it. In the Hoenn region, Wailord is linked to deep maritime areas, reinforcing its image as a majestic ocean giant.
To optimize the capture, it is advisable to reduce its HP — despite their high quantity — and to use Berries or appropriate Poké Balls depending on the generation.
Wailord in battle and strategies
In battle, Wailord is often used as an HP wall rather than a pure attacker. Its offensive power is decent, but it is primarily its HP stat that makes the difference. It can absorb several hits before going down, which allows for placing support moves or wearing down the opponent.
Against Electric or Grass Pokémon, Wailord becomes vulnerable. It is therefore essential to plan a partner capable of handling these counters. At level 50, its potential remains stable, but it requires a solid moveset and sometimes EV investment to maximize its effectiveness.
Pokémon cards and collector appeal
In the Pokémon card universe, Wailord is highly appreciated for its imposing design and its high-HP cards. Certain Wailord Pokémon cards highlight its extreme endurance, which appeals to both players and collectors alike. EX or special cards can reach interesting values depending on their rarity and condition.
For collecting enthusiasts, Wailord remains an iconic Water-type Pokémon, immediately recognizable and often sought after to complete Hoenn-related sets or collections featuring the largest Pokémon in the Pokédex.
