General overview of Spinarak

Spinarak is a Bug- and Poison-type Pokémon introduced in the second generation. Its Japanese name is Itomaru. This Pokémon is easily recognizable by its spider-like appearance and the face-shaped pattern on its abdomen, often used to intimidate opponents during battles.

Spinarak occupies a special place in the Johto Pokédex, particularly for players looking for an accessible Poison-type Pokémon from the very first levels. It is mainly encountered at night on certain routes, which affects its capture and its integration into a team early in the adventure.

Type and weaknesses of Spinarak

The Bug and Poison typing gives Spinarak several interesting resistances but also notable weaknesses. It resists Grass, Fighting, Poison, and Bug attacks. However, it is vulnerable to Fire, Psychic, Flying, and Rock attacks, which limits its effectiveness against certain common opponents.

This dual typing nonetheless allows Spinarak to access Poison and web-based moves that can hinder the opposing team, notably by reducing Speed or inflicting progressive damage.

Stats and combat potential

Spinarak's base stats are modest. Its HP is relatively low, as are its Defense and Special Defense. However, its Speed is decent for an early-game Pokémon, occasionally allowing it to attack first depending on level and nature.

Its Attack is slightly higher than its Special Attack, which generally steers its set toward physical moves. In terms of EVs, Spinarak is sometimes used to train Speed or Attack effort points, particularly thanks to its frequent presence in the wild in certain areas.

Available moves and abilities

Spinarak learns several interesting moves as it levels up. It quickly gains Poison-type moves such as Poison Sting, useful for inflicting a toxic status. Bug-type moves allow it to counter certain Grass- or Psychic-types encountered early in the game.

It can also learn moves related to webs and threads that reduce the opponent's Speed or impede movement. Through TMs, Spinarak can round out its set with coverage moves, though its damage remains limited without evolution.

Evolution of Spinarak

Spinarak evolves into Ariados starting at level 22. This evolution marks a notable improvement in its stats, particularly in Attack and Speed. Ariados then becomes more viable in battle, especially for players who enjoy strategies based on Poison and entrapment.

The evolution is automatic once the required level is reached, with no special condition. This makes it a simple Pokémon to raise, ideal for players who want a quick evolution without trading or special items.

Presence in the Pokédex and collectible cards

In the Pokédex, Spinarak is described as a Pokémon that weaves fine but resistant webs to capture its prey. It is often active at night, which explains its low visibility during the day in the games.

On the collectible card side, Spinarak appears regularly in sets linked to Johto or to Bug-type Pokémon. Its cards often feature Poison-based or progressive damage abilities, with moderate but strategic power to slow down the opponent.
