Detailed information

General overview of Smoliv

Smoliv is a Grass type Pokémon introduced in the Paldea region. Its English name is Smoliv and its Japanese name is ミニーブ. It is a small Pokémon inspired by an olive, appreciated by players for its role as an introduction to the Grass type in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Smoliv is available quite early in the adventure, making it an interesting choice for building a balanced team from the very first levels.

In the Pokédex, Smoliv is described as a calm Pokémon that releases oil from the fruit on its head. This characteristic appears in its design but also in some of its moves. Its small size and light weight influence its play style, which is oriented more toward survival and support than brute force.

Type and weaknesses

Smoliv has only the Grass type. This type gives it access to many moves based on leaves, seeds, and natural energy. In return, it has several classic weaknesses that must be anticipated in battle.

  • Weak to Fire attacks

  • Weak to Ice attacks

  • Weak to Poison attacks

  • Weak to Flying and Bug attacks

The Grass type nevertheless allows Smoliv to resist Water and Ground attacks well, which can be useful depending on the weather or the opponents encountered.

Stats and evolution

Smoliv's base stats are modest. Its strengths lie more in Special Defense than in Attack. Its HP are decent for a starting Pokémon, but its offensive power is limited before it evolves.

Smoliv evolves from level 25, which corresponds to a key moment in the player's progression. This evolution noticeably improves its stats and allows it to fully exploit its Grass attacks. Before reaching that level, it is mainly used to weaken opponents and absorb a few hits.

Useful moves and abilities

Smoliv mainly learns Grass type attacks, with a few Normal moves to vary the options in battle. Seed Bomb is one of the important attacks it can use to deal consistent damage from the mid-game onward.

  • Tackle for the early levels

  • Seed Bomb for reliable Grass damage

  • Razor Leaf for a fast and effective attack

  • Support moves based on nature and seeds

Its Ability is oriented toward consistency and survival, making it more interesting in prolonged battles than in quick skirmishes.

Capture, breeding, and availability

Smoliv is easy to catch in the grassy areas of Paldea. Its catch rate is high, allowing it to be obtained without any particular difficulty. It is often encountered in sunny weather, which boosts Grass attacks.

Regarding Eggs, Smoliv belongs to a group compatible with several Grass Pokémon, which makes breeding easier to obtain good Natures or specific EVs. Breeding allows its stats to be optimized from level 1.

Smoliv in the card game and Pokémon GO

In the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Smoliv mainly appears as a basic card. It is appreciated by collectors for its simple and natural design, even if its power remains limited. These cards are often used as evolution support in Grass decks.

In Pokémon GO, Smoliv is available during events or in certain specific areas. Its max CP remains moderate, but it allows you to earn useful candies to complete the evolutionary family. It is rarely seen in raids, but remains interesting for completing the Pokédex and associated research tasks.
