General overview of Smeargle
Smeargle is a unique Pokémon in the Pokédex thanks to its entirely different way of functioning compared to other species. Known as Smeargle in English and ドーブル in Japanese, this Normal-type Pokémon stands apart through its exclusive ability to learn almost every move in the game. Smeargle is recognizable by its brush-shaped tail, used as a painting tool and also as a symbolic weapon in battle.
In the main games, Smeargle is most appreciated by experienced players for its strategic possibilities. It does not shine through its base stats or HP, but through its near-unlimited access to moves, making it a one-of-a-kind Pokémon often used for precise strategies, support or advanced challenges.
Move mechanics and unique trait
Smeargle's main distinguishing feature lies in its signature move called Sketch. This move allows Smeargle to permanently copy the last move used by the opponent in battle. This mechanic works a limited number of times based on the available slots, which forces the player to carefully plan each move acquisition.
Thanks to Sketch, Smeargle can learn moves from every type, whether offensive, defensive or support-oriented. This includes moves normally reserved for legendary Pokémon or final evolutions. This freedom makes it a highly sought-after tool for strategic battle and certain advanced game mechanics.
Examples of battle uses
Support with moves such as Spore, Light Screen or Trick Room
Surprise offensive set with high-power moves
Pokémon utility for field control and positioning
Stats and in-game limitations
Despite its immense theoretical offensive potential, Smeargle remains a fragile Pokémon. Its base stats are low, with little HP, limited defense and average speed. This means it must be protected or used intelligently to avoid going down too quickly against a direct opponent.
In competitive battle, Smeargle is rarely used as a primary attacker. It finds its place instead in specialized teams, often in double battle or in alternative formats where its versatility can be fully expressed.
Catching and presence in the Pokédex
Smeargle is generally findable in the wild in certain specific areas depending on the game. Catching it is relatively straightforward in terms of level, but its real interest begins after capture, when the player decides which moves to teach it. In the Pokédex, it is classified as the Painter Pokémon, a direct nod to its design and its
