General overview of Purugly

Purugly is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in the fourth generation. It is known as Purugly in English and ブニャット in Japanese. Purugly is the direct evolution of Glameow, a feline Pokémon that gains in size, mass, and power once it has evolved. For players, Purugly is mainly recognized for its high Speed and its combat style oriented toward quick damage rather than endurance.

In the Pokédex, Purugly is described as a territorial and dominant Pokémon that uses its imposing tail to intimidate opponents. Its massive appearance contrasts with its ability to move quickly, making it an interesting choice in certain battle strategies.

Type and role in battle

Purugly has only the Normal type. This type gives it broad neutrality against many opponents, but it remains vulnerable to Fighting-type moves. In return, it is completely immune to Ghost-type moves, which can be exploited strategically.

In battle, Purugly is often used as a fast physical attacker. Its Speed allows it to strike first and deal damage before taking a hit. It is less suited to prolonged battles due to its average defenses.

Stats and base values

Purugly's base stats clearly highlight its offensive orientation. Its HP is decent without being exceptional, but sufficient to absorb a few hits. Its Attack and above all its Speed are its main assets, while its Special Defense remains more fragile.

This base distribution makes Purugly effective in formats where initiative is essential. At high levels, particularly around level 40, it can surprise more robust opponents by dealing quick and consistent damage.

Useful moves and abilities

Purugly has a wide range of physical moves and abilities through TMs. Among its most commonly used moves, there are hits based on raw power and speed, ideal for exploiting its offensive potential.

  • Scratch to deal quick damage in the early game

  • Rock Smash to counter Steel or Rock types

  • Aerial Ace for a reliable move that never misses

  • Play Rough to surprise certain opposing types

It can also learn effective priority moves for quickly chaining turns, which is appreciated in dynamic battles and low-level raids.

Use in Pokémon cards

As a Pokémon card, Purugly is generally represented as a damage-oriented card rather than a control card. Its cards often highlight its claws, its imposing face, and its ability to deal direct damage quickly. Some cards have a low Energy cost, which allows for a quick setup on the field.

For collectors, Purugly remains an interesting card to stock, especially in editions where its design is showcased. Its price remains broadly accessible, making it a good option for completing a collection related to the fourth generation.

Evolution and additional information

Purugly evolves from Glameow by leveling up, without any particular item. This evolution marks a clear change in playstyle, going from an agile but fragile Pokémon to a more imposing and offensive one.

Its height and high weight reinforce its image as a dominant Pokémon, while its Pokédex entries emphasize its proud and aggressive character. Well used, Purugly can become an excellent battle asset for players looking for a fast, straightforward Pokémon that is effective against many opponents.
