General overview of Pelipper

Pelipper is a Water and Flying type Pokémon introduced in the third generation. Its English name is Pelipper and its Japanese name is ペリッパー. It is the direct evolution of Wingull and holds a special place in the Pokédex thanks to its enormous beak, capable of carrying water, objects and even other small Pokémon. Pelipper is number 279 in the national Pokédex and is often associated with maritime areas, ports and windy coastlines.

Pelipper stands out for a unique body plan among bird Pokémon. Its enormous beak acts as a genuine storage pouch, which directly influences its gameplay, both in competitive strategy and in the Trading Card Game. Its massive appearance contrasts with its role as a support and defensive pivot in many teams.

Type, resistances and weaknesses

Pelipper has the dual Water and Flying typing, which gives it useful resistances to Water, Fighting, Bug, Steel and Fire type attacks. This type combination lets it enter the field easily to absorb certain hits and support the team with utility moves.

In return, its weaknesses are very pronounced. It takes heavy damage from Electric type attacks, which represent its primary weakness, as well as from Rock type moves. Managing these threats is essential to make the most of its potential in battle.

Base stats and EVs

Pelipper's base stats are oriented toward Defense and HP rather than Speed. It has decent HP, solid Defense and Special Defense, but its Speed remains low compared to other Flying Pokémon. Its Attack and Special Attack are average, positioning it more as a support than a sweeper.

In terms of EVs, Pelipper is often played with investment in HP and Defense or Special Defense in order to optimize its longevity. This spread lets it hold on longer against opposing attacks and place its support moves effectively.

Notable attacks and moves

Pelipper has a wide range of Water and Flying type attacks. It can learn Hydro Pump, Surf or Water Gun to deal solid damage, as well as Flying attacks such as Hurricane or Air Slash. It also has access to Ice Beam, a very useful move for surprising Grass or Dragon type opponents.

Its utility movepool is one of its greatest assets. Pelipper can learn Tailwind, Knock Off or Roost, which reinforces its support role. These moves make it an excellent pivot capable of controlling the pace of battle.

Evolution, breeding and eggs

Pelipper is the evolution of Wingull starting at level 25. This evolution marks a radical shift in role, going from a small, fast Pokémon to a bulkier and more defensive one. For breeding, Pelipper belongs to the Flying and Water 1 egg groups, which allows it to pass down certain interesting moves to offspring produced from eggs.

Male and female show no notable visual difference, but their breeding compatibility is important for players looking for specific attacks through inherited moves.

Battle utility and Trading Card Game

Competitively, Pelipper is particularly valued for its abilities and its capacity to support the team over time. It is often used in teams built around terrain control and tempo management. Its imposing size and its enormous beak make it a recognizable symbol on the battlefield.

In the Trading Card Game, Pelipper appears regularly as a defensive or utility card. Its cards often highlight its high HP, its ability to manipulate energy or to disrupt the opponent. These characteristics make it an interesting card for players seeking stability and control rather than raw power.
