General Overview of Orthworm

Orthworm is a Pokémon of the Steel type introduced in the ninth generation, appearing in Pokémon Violet and Pokémon Scarlet. Known in English as Orthworm and in Japanese as ミミズズ, this Pokémon stands out for its metallic worm appearance and its unique defensive behavior. Orthworm has no evolution, making it an autonomous creature designed to fill a precise role in strategy-oriented teams built around defense and field control.

In the Pokédex, Orthworm is classified as a Pokémon that lives underground, capable of moving quickly through sand and mud thanks to its iron-composed body. Its robust, segmented tail is often highlighted, as it allows it to attack but also to absorb or redirect some of the damage taken during battles.

Type, Weaknesses, and Resistances

Orthworm is exclusively Steel type. This type grants it numerous resistances, particularly against Normal, Grass, Ice, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Dragon, Steel, and Fairy attacks. However, it remains vulnerable to Fire, Fighting, and Ground attacks — types that are very common in Pokémon Violet.

This combination of resistances allows Orthworm to absorb hits and stay on the field for a long time, even against powerful opponents. It does however take heavy damage from moves like Earthquake or Mud Shot, requiring a good read of the battle before sending it in.

Stats and HP

Orthworm has balanced stats oriented toward Defense. With around 70 HP, it is not the most durable Pokémon on paper, but its high Defense more than compensates for this. Its Attack is decent, sufficient to deal consistent damage, though it is not designed for offensive sweeping.

Its Speed is relatively low, making it more effective in teams built around tempo or positioning. EVs are often invested in Defense and HP to optimize its ability to endure repeated attacks.

Notable Moves and Abilities

Orthworm learns several Steel- and Ground-type moves, reinforcing its role as a control Pokémon. It can use attacks based on its tail and metallic body to deal direct damage or disrupt the opponent. Iron-based attacks are particularly effective against Fairy and Rock types.

It also has access to support moves that allow it to stay in battle longer, such as attacks that reduce the opponent's power or exploit the sandy terrain. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, moves learned via TM give it good strategic flexibility.
