Detailed information

Overview of Maschiff

Maschiff is a Dark-type Pokémon introduced in the Paldea region. Its French name is Grondogue and its Japanese name is オラチフ. It is the direct pre-evolution of Mabosstiff, making it a highly anticipated Pokémon for players seeking consistent progression from the very first levels of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet.

Maschiff is defined by its massive appearance, imposing fangs, and protective attitude. In the Pokédex, it is often described as a serious, loyal Pokémon ready to defend its target at all costs. These qualities make it an interesting choice for battle, as well as for Pokémon card collectors.

Type, stats, and battle potential

Maschiff is exclusively Dark-type. This type gives it clear weaknesses to Fighting, Fairy, and Bug attacks, but also good resistances to Psychic and Ghost attacks. In battle, its primary role is to deal physical damage while taking hits reliably.

Its base stats emphasize high Attack and solid HP, making it effective against many wild Pokémon encountered in the games. Its Speed remains moderate but sufficient for a power-oriented Pokémon.

  • Decent HP allowing it to hold out for multiple turns

  • High physical Attack with strong damage output

  • Balanced Defense and Special Defense

  • Average Speed suited to prolonged battles

EVs are often invested in Attack and HP to optimize performance at level 50 and level 100. This choice is particularly popular among competitive players.

Abilities, moves, and strategy

Maschiff has abilities oriented toward intimidation and offensive pressure. Its main ability causes a drop in certain opposing stats upon entering battle, which is very useful for weakening a target from the very first turn.

It naturally learns moves such as Bite, Fire Fang, Thunder Fang, and Roar. These moves allow it to cover multiple types and adapt its strategy depending on the opponent. Its Special Attack remains limited, confirming its role as a physical attacker.

  • Bite to benefit from the Dark typing

  • Powerful physical strikes and charges

  • Roar to disrupt the opponent's strategy

  • Moves learned by leveling up or through TMs

Evolutions, breeding, and forms

Maschiff is the pre-evolution of Mabosstiff. Evolution is triggered simply by leveling up, with no specific item required. There is currently no other known form, regional variant, or special form.

When breeding, Maschiff belongs to the Field egg group, making it easy to obtain eggs to optimize IVs and nature. The Brave and Serious natures are often chosen to reinforce its Attack.

Locations, games, and Pokémon cards

In Pokémon Violet and Pokémon Scarlet, Maschiff is available in the wild in several areas of Paldea, notably in South Area No. 2 and certain rocky zones. It is also possible to evolve it directly from a Maschiff caught at a low level.

In terms of Pokémon cards, Maschiff already has several appreciated cards featuring artwork that highlights its fangs and intimidating appearance. The price of these cards varies depending on rarity and condition, but they appeal to both players and collectors.

Thanks to its striking Pokédex entry, its clear role in battle, and its solid place in the Pokédex, Maschiff remains a consistent and effective Pokémon in the Paldea universe.
