General overview of Marowak

Marowak is a Ground-type Pokémon, known in Japanese as Garagara. It is the direct evolution of Cubone once it reaches a certain level. This Pokémon has a very distinctive identity thanks to the bone it wields as its primary weapon, which strongly influences its moves, its battle strategy, and even its signature abilities.

In the Pokédex, Marowak is recognized as a physical fighter with excellent Defense and decent offensive power. Its HP is average, but its base Attack makes it particularly useful for direct hits like Earthquake or Stone Edge. In terms of size and weight, Marowak is a relatively small but very sturdy Pokémon, weighing around 45 kg depending on the generation.

Marowak also exists in an Alolan form, which completely changes its type and its strategic role in the games. The standard form remains the most common in the main versions and in Pokémon GO.

Evolution, characteristics, and useful information for players

Marowak evolves from Cubone simply by leveling up. Its encounter rate varies by game, but it often appears late in the adventure, in caves or rocky areas. Its Ground type allows it to counter Electric Pokémon effectively, while its access to several Rock-type moves gives it an advantage over Fire, Ice, and Flying types.

At the strategic level, its Bone Keep ability is one of its most sought-after assets. This ability allows a Marowak holding the Thick Club item to double its Attack, giving the Pokémon surprising power in many scenarios. This bonus makes moves like Earthquake or Double-Edge particularly devastating.

In terms of base stats, Marowak stands out mainly for its high Defense and solid physical Attack. Its Speed is low, which makes it dependent on its ability to take hits before striking back. For EVs, players generally invest in Attack and Defense to optimize its effectiveness. For IVs, a strong Attack roll is essential to get the most out of its physical hits.

Moves, attacks, and available TMs

Marowak has many useful moves once it reaches a good level. Its naturally learned moves include hits of the Ground, Fighting, and Rock types. Among the most commonly used moves in competitive play:

  • Earthquake – a Ground-type move, very reliable and powerful

  • Bonemerang – its signature move, striking twice

  • Stone Edge – excellent against Flying and Fire types

  • Headbutt – useful in a more control-oriented set

  • Fire Punch (depending on the game) – to counter Ice, Grass, or Steel

Marowak can also learn several TMs including Rock moves (Stone Edge TM), Fighting moves, and even some Poison moves depending on the generation. Its Alolan form, on the other hand, gains access to entirely different moves, which changes its role in battle.

Strategy and team use

Marowak is primarily an offensive physical attacker built around the Ground type, capable of quickly eliminating Electric, Rock, and Poison Pokémon. The standard form is often used as a physical wall thanks to its Defense. Its main strength comes from its bone weapon and its Bone Keep ability, which can double its Attack power if it holds the corresponding item.

It remains vulnerable to Water and Ice moves, two very common types, which requires solid team coverage. It is recommended to pair it with a Grass or Dragon-type Pokémon to balance out its weaknesses. In recent games, Marowak can fill the role of a slow but very powerful physical sweeper when it receives support like Swords Dance.

Alolan form

The Alolan form of Marowak completely changes its type, available moves, and play style. This form is not merely cosmetic: it also alters its strategic interactions and gives it a more offensive role on certain teams. However, it is less suited to classic Ground-type strategies, as it loses access to some key moves.
