General overview of Mareanie

Mareanie is a Water and Poison type Pokémon introduced in the seventh generation. Its Japanese name is ヒドイデ. This Pokémon is known for its cruel behaviour and its body covered in venomous spines, making it a feared creature in marine areas. In the Pokédex, Mareanie is classified as a particularly aggressive Pokémon, capable of inflicting heavy damage thanks to its venom.

Mareanie has stats oriented towards Defense and HP, allowing it to hold out for a long time in battle, especially against physical attackers. Its base stats emphasise endurance rather than Speed or raw power. For players, this makes it an interesting Pokémon to use in stall or attrition strategies.

Type, weaknesses, and resistances

The dual Water and Poison type gives Mareanie a particular defensive profile. It resists moves of the Water, Fighting, Poison, Bug, Fire, and Ice types. On the other hand, it remains vulnerable to Ground, Electric, and Psychic moves, which must be taken into account in strategic battles.

In battle, this type combination allows Mareanie to stand its ground against many common Pokémon found in sea or beach areas, while forcing the opponent to use specific moves to counter it effectively.

Stats, EVs, and recommended nature

Mareanie's stats show excellent Defense and decent Special Defense, with sufficient HP to absorb several hits. Its Attack and Speed are limited, which orients its role towards a defensive Pokémon rather than a sweeper.

  • Recommended EVs in HP and Defense to maximise durability

  • Recommended nature: Bold or Calm depending on the desired battle style

  • Frequently used in teams built around poison and attrition

Moves, Abilities, and TMs

Mareanie naturally learns Poison and Water type moves, including abilities based on venom, Toxic Spikes, and Bite. These moves allow it to poison the opponent and progressively reduce their HP, an important advantage in extended battles.

Its Abilities reinforce its defensive role, particularly those linked to reducing incoming damage or poisoning the enemy on contact. Through TMs, Mareanie can access strategic moves such as Toxic, Venoshock, or Poison Jab, broadening its tactical options.

Evolution, breeding, and capture

Mareanie evolves into Toxapex from a certain level onwards, further improving its defensive stats and battle potential. This evolution is highly sought after by players wishing to build a team focused on resilience and field control.

Mareanie is mainly encountered at sea or near beaches. Its catch rate is moderate, which sometimes requires several attempts. It is compatible with breeding and can pass on certain interesting moves through Eggs, which is useful for competitive optimisation.

Mareanie in the Pokémon Trading Card Game

In the TCG, Mareanie appears as a defense- and poison-oriented card. Its effects often emphasise poisoning, residual damage, and controlling the pace of battle. These cards are appreciated in decks built around stalling and progressive pressure.

Mareanie cards stand out for their visual style evoking the sea and their dangerous nature. They make a good addition for collectors and players looking to build original strategies around the Poison type.
