Detailed information

General overview of Mantyke

Mantyke is a Pokémon of the Water and Flying type introduced in the fourth generation. Its English name is Mantyke and its Japanese name is Tamanta. It is the baby form of Mantine, which directly influences its role in the Pokédex and its strategic use in teams.

Mantyke is primarily known for its early access to support moves and its conditional evolution. Its appearance is inspired by a juvenile manta ray, with a flat body and wide fins adapted to the sea and vast stretches of water.

Type and strategic role

The Water and Flying type of Mantyke grants it several useful resistances, notably against Water, Fighting and Bug attacks. However, it remains vulnerable to Electric and Rock attacks, which limits its direct exposure in battle.

In a team, Mantyke is not designed to deal heavy damage. Its role is closer to a Pokémon of transition, used to prepare the evolution toward Mantine or to provide occasional support through moves like Water Pulse or Surf depending on the level and generation.

Base stats and EVs

Mantyke's stats are modest, which is consistent with its status as a baby Pokémon. Its HP are reasonable for its encounter level, but its Attack and Defense remain limited. Its Special Defense is slightly better, allowing it to better absorb certain Water or Ice attacks.

In terms of EVs, Mantyke is rarely optimized for competitive play. Players looking to use it temporarily can however invest in HP and Special Defense in order to increase its longevity during trainer battles or on routes.

Notable moves and attacks

Mantyke naturally learns Water moves like Water Pulse, providing decent pressure in the early game. It can also access Flying type moves depending on the version, reinforcing its limited offensive coverage.

Through TMs and HMs, Mantyke can learn Surf or Waterfall in certain generations, making it useful outside of battle for progression. Hydro Pump remains inaccessible before its evolution, but it already benefits from good special potential to prepare for this transition.

Evolution and conditions

Mantyke's evolution into Mantine is unique. To evolve, Mantyke must gain a level while having a Remoraid in the party. This unique condition pushes players to think about their team composition and to plan the evolution at the right time.

Once evolved, Mantine becomes a much larger Pokémon with significantly higher stats, justifying the investment made in Mantyke from the early routes of Diamond, Pearl or Platinum.

Presence in the Pokédex and obtaining

Mantyke is generally obtained in coastal areas or through breeding Mantine with a specific incense. It appears in the Pokédex as a Pokémon living in groups at sea, often following smaller schools of fish.

In certain versions such as Legends: Arceus, Mantyke can exist in alpha forms, temporarily increasing its appeal for catching and completing Pokédex tasks.

Cards and collector interest

Mantyke has several cards from the Diamond and Pearl expansions as well as more recent reprints. These cards often highlight its connection to Mantine and its Water moves.

For collectors, Mantyke remains appreciated as an evolutionary base card, particularly in sets focused on the sea or Water type Pokémon. Its value rests more on collection cohesion than on pure rarity.
